I have a child in year 8. marked the books, hardwriting a real issue, child is not on the SN regester.

So I cut down the writing for him, use spider diagrams etc to see if this helps any. Have a chat with child who says the work done was not the best s/he could do, was distaracted etc. put child where isn't distracted.

Take books in, mark them No improvement.

Check SN reg again, no on it. Reading age and spelling age normal.

Refer to the SENCO, point out the dysparity, she thnks (as I do) dyspraxia. I get then a ticking off for not giving him 'writing free' access, cut and stick etc. The work book is going to be used as a 'how not to do it' excercise.

Well, thanks a fucking bunch SENCO. This poor bloody child has been in school for 8 years and nothing has been done. I have him for 6 weeks, see a probelm and flag it up and get a bollocking.

Fume!

They're pissed off because you're doing their job for them - and obviously more effectively.

The child will be thankful - in time.

you're damned if you do, damned if you don't it seems. Some Senco's are great, others have an easy target in the teacher...

Cut and paste can get deadly dull for children though. I hope she gave you lots of ability-appropriate ideas for "writing-free access".

Tiggiwinkle · 10/10/2006 17:19

How can the Senco blame you when he is not even on the register? Why was he not picked up, at least in year 7 (if not years before)?
Dont worry-you sound as if you are doing a great job!

popsycal · 10/10/2006 17:20

been there too....

Blandmum · 10/10/2006 17:30

I was sooooooooooooooooooooo cross.

I was being criticised for using materials with a child who was not on the SEN regester, and still wouldn't be anywhere nearer getting on the regester if I hadn't brought it to the daft woman's attention. No-one picked him up last year, none of his other teachers picked him up this year. And I'm the one who gets farking criticiesd

Kid is smashing and deserves every break.

How on earth did this child slip through the net till this person had the fortune to meet your good self?.

Your conscience is clear, you did a great job in highlighting this child's problems to the SENCO. I would hope that you would do the same thing again should the need arise.

Not surprised to read of this happening unfortunately (and that's an understatement). It makes you wonder what the child's parents have been told (my guess nothing).

Great so they expect you to teach by osmosis now huh?
I think they were being over defensive to cover their own inadequate arses tbh.
I am always the lead on dd's SEN. The SENCO is ridiculous, she knows nothing about my daughter in all honesty

Blandmum · 10/10/2006 18:38

prior to this I always rated the SENCO quite well.

I was just realing from the criticism that she made of my teaching of what I had initialy thought to be an NT child!

Thnking about it, I have taught this kid 8 times (he has been away part of the time). Granted that is 7 too many without more action but I didn't think that I had done badly by him, and at least I got things moving. But it would seem that I should have precognition!
