State vs Independent Secondary School for dyslexic dd

Dd (9 yo) is moderately dyslexic. Our options for secondary school are a good local comprehensive or a CReSTed independent school.

We would have to make a lot of sacrifices to send dd to the independent school - but we would be happy to do so if it was the best option.

I would love to hear anyone's positive experiences of state and private education at secondary level. So far, our experience of support and help in our state primary school has been pretty awful.

In general I would say state do much better than independent with sen, including dyslexia. It depends on the schools though. I'd talk to both sencos.

Lots of independent schools have great specialist support ( although you often have to pay extra for this if you are talking about individual coaching). But there is also often a benefit in much smaller class sizes, even smaller groups for some subjects so there is more potential for differentiation in terms of teacher time, also possibly more resources. As always it depends on the individual teacher / school approach though so as Jelly says it's really a question of the two schools in question for your DD.
