How do you get an assessment for dyslexia?

We suspect dd, 16, might have mild dyslexia. There has been constant feedback from teachers that her written work isn't checked well enough (and they may be right), but also we've realised she does muddle the order of letters and numbers, and doesn't spot mistakes even when she does read her work back.

How would we go about getting an assessment and how long does the process take? We are in Wales if that makes any difference.

Thanks for any advice

A private EP assessment can be very expensive, I offer a screening service which gives an At Risk of dyslexia score, it also gives a profile of strengths and weaknesses. I also supply ideas on how parents could help. I realise that it isn't a diagnosis but the report can be used to persuade reluctant schools to put your child forward for an EP assessment.

Bennybrains was it you asking about for advice regarding your business on the SN forum the other week? Did you say then that you were AMBDA qualified? Just being nosy. It sounds like you are using a screener from your post.

It is indeed ! No I don't hold that qualification, I wish I did! I'm horrified at how many parents are being refused help by schools. My nephew was in the same situation a few years ago when the class teacher actually told my sister that she felt he was dyslexic but the head had told her not to say anything.

I found a free course for doing your own assessment on the Udemy site called How to test for dyslexia in children, but you have to put in a coupon called dys23. I have a ds who ticks all the boxes, and his tutor is really nice but so far the school isn’t doing much Confused.

Just to add in here that my DS has recently been assessed as having mild dyslexia and slow working memory. Not picked up by school at all which surprises me a bit - he is 11 and past his entrance exams which he sat pre assessment.
I went on a hunch and lightbulb moment I had just before the easter school break - best thing I ever did went against my dh's opinion. Today I have received his formal report which makes for interesting and very positive reading. The ed psych I used wasn't cheap and not local to me at all - but I went on recommendation and he travelled down from norfolk to east surrey to assess my DS in a comfortable familiar own school environment.
I have no doubt we have a road ahead of us but we are informed and will ensure he has strategies in place to excel in his secondary education.

Hi, has any parents had any of their children tested for Dyslexia lately, my Daughter has been quoted £800 for the test, I know my Grandson is Dyslexic as my own Son is and can see the same signs, just wondered once you get the corfirmation that a child is Dyslexic what help is available , normal Sencos in school don't seem to be qualified for this specialist teaching, it is such a worry trying to get help
