My son is statemented. He has ASD. Current school do not seem to understand him or meet his needs. We are considering moving him to another school. If any other parents have any experience of this please can you let us know.

You can write and ask the LA to change the name of the school on his statement. This is fairly straightforward if it is a change from one mainstream school to another mainstream. Is he currently in mainstream?

Do you know if the other school has a place or has agreed they can meet his needs?

At lot depends on whether all parties involved such as EPs agree but it does ultimately come down to the authority agreeing and what they are like. You might like to consider speaking to your local parent partnership who can support and advise you in the process in more detail, though not advocate for you. However, don't expect anyone to advise you about what they think is the right thing to do for your son, you are on your own there.

It is important for you to have a good understanding of his needs and the support that will meet those needs and represent these accurately in part 2 of his statement and get good objectives and specific provision into part 3 of his statement. In theory, that leads to part 4, naming of the school. Are you happy with his statement?

Finally, only you know your son and how well he would handle the change but with ASD, might the change need to be carefully handled with visits, etc.
