Dyslexia, private assessments & tuition

My ds is 6 and in year 1. He is below where he should be in reading & writing. School have been fairly supportive, he has an IEP and some one on one time with TA.
Since getting the IEP, he has made some progress but I really worry about him loosing confidance as I think he is starting to notice he is falling way behind.
I have been looking into what other help is available. I was thinking about private tuition but it seems he needs an ed psych assessment before we can go down that route.
Has anyone paid for a private assessment / private tuition for their dc and if you have would you recommend it?

Hi, I'm an independent specialist reading tutor. I take on anyone - some (50%ish) have already had an assessment by an independent or LEA ed. psych., other parents come straight to me.

I always assess each student before beginning lessons using my own set of tests, which are much more revealing /helpful than the results of ed psych tests.

Take a look at my webpage:

I know loads who have paid privately. Its all very well waiting for the school to sort it out but in the meantime, if you think private tuition would help, and you can afford it, then do it. The younger you do it the better. Please don't wait till he's 7,8 -9 or 10.

My son had tuition in Year 2 - one year of it - he wasn't dyslexic but falling behind, loosing confidence. It was the best thing we ever did. He's fine now. I did it early because a friend waited till her daughter was 8 but by then her daughters self confidence was on the floor - she told me to encouraged me to get my son some support before the gulf got to wide.
