My ds has been struggling both at home and at school with a variety of issues and after speaking to his teacher and the SENCo at his school earlier this week, we all agreed it would be helpful to have him assesed for dyspraxia by a paediatrician. The SENCo will write a referral letter but she said it would take months for an appointment to come through. So we are thinking we will pay to get an assesment done sooner. He is in year 6 and I really want to get this sorted before he goes to secondary school.

But I don't know where to start!!! Does anyone know where I could get an assesment done? Would I need a paediatrician or an OT? Can I just get one out the phone book???!!! We re in Kent

Your GP can make a referral to the community paediatrician - may be a quicker route?

The British Psychological Society has a list of Educational Psychologists who can do the relevant report.

Sam, if you are anywhere near the Ashford area, you're in luck! My son is dyspraxic and was seen by Dr Freiberg, a specialist in this area at the William Harvey Hospital.
We had our initial appointment with him via our Gp. I saw the GP with a recommendation from the school and a list of all the things he struggled with. It took a matter of weeks and we had the OT in school within 3 months.
Hope that helps

Thanks for the tips. My GP has been really unhelpful about this issue. When I described ds's issues he just said that he sounded a bit like his ten yr old son and that labels werent helpful. He also said it sounded like he had a social/communication disorder (which I dont think he has) He said it was entirely up to the school to address the problem if there was one as dyspraxia is considered a special educational need rather than a medical problem. Maybe I'll think about going back but I found it quite upsetting last time I spoke to him.

I'll have a look at the list mrudugawa mentioned and we are about 40mins from Ashford. I wonder if Dr Freiberg does private consultations?

If you have the money, Dr Lucy Brown-Wright is most excellent. Google her - she's Fantastic!

You could also try the Christmas Clinic in Tunbridge Wells. They are very highly regarded. See here
