Ds is in reception and has suspected dyslexia - we have a meeting with her this week after she's observed ds. Dyslexia runs in my family and tbh it's clear ds has issues with reading and writing. He is a quite a challenging little rascal and I wonder if this ties in.

edoes anyone have any advice about what questions to ask? I have no clue but know these meetings are gold dust. I don't want to waste the opportunity.

we are moving areas in the summer. Is it possible ds would be statemented or is he too young?

Anyone?

I assume we tell her how he behaves at home, things we have noticed he has issues with.

We'll ask what we can do to support him.

Is this meeting for us or the school? What will happen next if she does think there are issues?

She's just observing? Hard to know what she'll gain from that without an assessment. Our son was observed after his assess. just told us he was day dreaming a lot but knew what was going on, and didn't write a lot down without prompting.
Ask when he's getting his full assessment.

He's not too young to receive a statement.

EP can set out recommendations re educational needs; they cannot diagnose any medical issues. I had a meeting with the EP immediately after my child was seen by this person.

EPs are employed by the LEA and may well therefore try and discourage you from applying for such a document. Ignore any such naysaying and make the statement application yourself.

www.ipsea.org.uk is a good website re the statementing process.

Thank you for the replies. We had a good chat and she is putting together a report, an IEP and ds will have a special educational needs document. I am feeling hopefully. We'll stop doing phonics and start learning words.
