Hello, I hope I have put this in the right topic I'm afraid I am new to the whole forum thing :/

I was just wondering if anybody else is having similar problems with their child in regards to them point blank refusing to read or write in school according to assessments done by the school and SEND services, my son(who is 6 yrs 7 months) is behind with his reading (4 years 5 months) and writing(4 years 6 months).

A written review for his SEN states that he is only reading level 2 books but several weeks ago he came home from school with a level 6 book which he read from cover to cover with very little help and very few attempts to keep him focused.

Whenever he has homework the first thing he will tell me is that he carn't do it I always have to have a brief discussion on why he needs to try to do it he has mentioned that his hand hurts, he struggles to get it to go into his brain but with patience and time he will complete his work and then flap and say he is proud sometimes he seems surprised that he could do it.

I don't understand why he won't do it at school all of the feedback I have received just points to him being stubborn, argumentative, defiant

I'm sorry to hear that your DS in struggling.

My DS2 is ASD and he really struggles in school with work because of the classroom enviroment. It is too noisy and busy for him and he can become overwhelmed. Since his diagnosis, he is still in main stream school, but the school have set up a quiet area for him where he can go when he feels anxious.

Many children with ASD have motor control issues. My son cannot just move his fingers to write, but grips the pen tightly and writes with his whole arm. He finds tyong much easier so now has an alphasmart neo so he can type instead of write at school ( alphasmart ). This was recomended by the OT and has really helped.

A referral to the OT whether or not he is diagnosed by CAMHS might be useful.

BTW the special needs children board is busier than this so you will get more answeres there
