Ds is 9 and currently having various problems with behaviour, concentration and anxiety. He is seeing camhs but atm they don't seem to think it is much of anything.

I think he has alot of symptoms of auditory processing disorder too, but people tend to glaze over when i mention it, like i am talking a foreign language.

Anyway, ds has for a while now liked having the subtitles on when watching tv, and it has now got to the stage where he automatically puts them for every programme and dvd.
Imo this fits with my view that ds understands better if he has visuals for things aswell as just hearing.

If you ask him why he has them on he just says he prefers it.

I just wondered if anyone else had dc that did this ?

Cant help much I'm afraid but if you post this on special needs children board you will probably get great advice etc.Its far busier there(bit quiet during holidays). My ds has Aspergers and that particular board has been a great help to me-much better than here!

TheOriginalNutcracker

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a listening disability, and using subtitles can be a useful coping strategy for some, My DW does it a lot.
You could have a look at my UK APD links list I would include a link to the APDUK web site but we are currently having technical glitch, but the new URL address should be working next week hopefully.

My ds does this! He's being assessed for Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome and is very visual. I hadn't thought that much of it until reading this thread, just thought it was another one of his 'things', but this has got me thinking. Very interesting, might mention it to SALT. We already use a visual timetable and emotion cards so this makes complete sense.

Yes me! I have (I suspect) hfa and maybe AD(H)D, I just find it so difficult to concentrate when people are talking.

I breath a sigh of relief when I discover a film is subtitled

Interesting. I do this. I have a ds on the spectrum. For me I get bored watching tv without subtitles, my eyes need something else to do.

ds2 sometimes does this. he calls the subtitles talking symbols. I assume you have gone down the route of checking his hearing for glue ear etc?

Oh only just noticed that I have replies on here. It is so interesting that other people have experienced this. Anyone in rl that i have mentioned it to, (including camhs) have looked at me like i am going nuts.

Ds has had his hearing checked several times and did does come out with a pass, but as I said, i think he fits the list for apd.

Camhs have now referred him on to another psych who is going to look at him more in depthly, and assess for aspergers and other things. I will make sure that i mention this there.

Lambskin - I had never heard of Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome, but have just read a few things on it, and ds's behaviour fits an alarming amount of it's criteria.
