This was part of my post about my daughter who is in year 1, she will be 6 in april and was questioning levels with her, her class teacher said shes no where near level one yet (sats levels) and is on stage 1 oxford reading tree (pink band) and has been for over a year with no progress. Would love some advice on whether we need to do more now or whether she sounds like we can just wait and see how things go.

We just had her parents evening, they said shes really behind, they cant get her to write more than a tiny bit, she gets confused working with numbers over 5 (I have worked at home with her and she can write her numbers 1-10 after that she cant write them), shes at the very basic with her number work adding up etc, her spellings she rarely ever gets them occassionally gets 1 right and on one occassion got 4 correct which was amazing for her. Her teacher said she hasnt really made any progress since reception, she can sound out some basic words but regularly sounds out then says a totally different word, she works better if she has someone with her but obviously at the moment they arent able to do that with her so a lot of the time she switches off, loses concentration and messes about, she regularly gets put on the black cloud for messing about or doing something wrong, he said she forgets so easily, one day you can go through something and the next she will have totally forget everything. She is adopted, shes been with us since she was 7 months old and in care since she was 11 days old, so there is all that behind her as her mum drank with her as well so obviously that may play a part, her teacher said he wasnt aware of her background and didnt know she was adopted, he was going to speak to the headteacher after parents evening about her, he said she is very young and it may just click with her but I said to him how long do you leave it though to see if that happens and he said he didnt know and was going to speak to the headteacher to see what they should do, I am going to see what he says about that and then think I will request they get someone in to assess her, if they havent already requested it themselves

Just to add I spoke to the headteacher this morning, he said she was really behind when she started in reception and it may be that she has progressed but at a level for her not the class, he said he wont know this till he looks at her file, he said there are assessments due at the beginning of december so to wait till these are done and he will have a better idea of her level and any progress, he also said he would observe her in class and make some notes.

Does it sounds like a normal 5 yr old whos a little behind or one who needs more support? Ive got four children but none have had special educational needs so not sure on how things go in school.

If your child is stuggling at school and if she needs more help you may be lucky and the school will be wonderful - assess and meet her needs quickly.

However most people's experience is that it's the parents who have to fight to get the assessment, work out what the needs are and fight to get those needs met. To do this you need a paper trail of what help is given and what the results of the help are, you may even have to pay for an assessment of what her needs are and what support she needs - in this worst case scenario you will have to prove that she is not making progress given the levels of support she is getting.

The Ipsea website and phone line is a great place to start www.ipsea.org.uk

Good luck.
