Hi, were currently under a pead with DS trying to get a dx, but i this is about his schooling.
DS is 7 and in yr 2
he is on school action+, gets 3 extra help sessions a week. which are the smaller classes pulled to a side of about 4/5 kids so they can get extra help with subjects, ds gets 2 literacy and 1 numberacy each week.

what i want to ask is about his "levels" at school. i have just had parents evening, and i had asked previously for her to write them down for us for the app. the expected average is 2b.....and ds is 1c numeracy and 1b for literacy, and has just gone up to 1b for writing.
his levels from leaving year one were exactly the same apart from writing which was 1c.
i asked his teacher what if his levels are the same or not much different by the next parents evening, which would be the end of yr 2, and she said "ALARM BELLS".

is there anything i should be doing? asking for? shouting to get? people to bring in??

i am never one to keep quiet if there is something that needs to be heard, but i am worried that i might be missing something that i should be doing.

sorry to be a pain xxx

I am interested in hearing replies/ My daughters nearly 7 in yr 2. She see the special teacher 3 days a week. She can barely read or write and is still on reception books which she has been on for 2 years. I feel like the school are fobbing me off. The teacher actually said shes lazy ehn the special teacher said she may be dyslexic. Anyways i am bipassing the school and have got an appointment on Monday at the docs to ask for a referral to the Educational phyc.

How long does it take to see a phyc from asking for a referal Smile?

fifi25, i suppose im lucky that his teacher says DS is not lazy, he actually works and tries very hard. EdPsyc and chams have been mentioned in passing between myself and ds teacher, but i know when it was mentioned last year (yr 1) they said that the service in our area has been cut by over half, and it would take a lot for them to even consider coming out to the school for him. Hopefully now that he is much worse, it will be enough, but it still hasnt been talked about in a way that says they want that.

maybee asking for a referal to a pead, or chams, as well as trying to get the EP out for your DD. i know that school nurses can also make referals, it was our school nurse that refered us to the peads.

good luck and let me know how you get on xxx

You are well within your rights to write to your LEA and request an assessment of your dc's educational needs in relation to a statement of special educational needs. It will not necessarily result in a statement but the school will be asked to produce evidence of DC's levels/needs etc and Ed Psych reports will be requested all within a specific time frame along with any other relevant professionals so if any further action is needed it can be put in place before your dc gets much older.

thanks milliemoo81

i had thought about a statement, but its such a big and "final" thing, iygwim.

we have the pead coming out to school soon, so i think i will wait till he has been, have a meeting with his teacher and senco, and see what the outcome of it all sugests to everyone.

i just wanted to make sure there wasnt something i had missed that i should be doing.

thanks xxx

aP,

I would be concerned that your DS has not made any progress in a year so it would suggest to me that SA plus is not working enough for him.

No, a statement is not such a big and final thing as you may think. It is far easier to apply for it at this stage than for instance leaving it until he is in Juniors.

Also you do not need a dx to apply for a statement.
By all means wait for the meeting with the SENCO and his teacher after the paed has been in but do not delay any statement application unduly. This is also because it can take six months to set up a statement.

Junior school is a different ball game from Infants and he may well struggle without the support a statement would bring with it; I would thus give the Statement some serious thought now. Unlike SA plus, a statement is legally binding as well. Also school action plus as a plan can be limited in terms of support.

They can and should be bringing in the EP to assess his educational needs and this is important with regards to obtaining a statement. EP cannot diagnose however.

thankyou for all your replies, it has certainly given me lots to think about, and lots of very useful information.
i will ask at a meeting about his iep progress, and see what they think about it all, along with the pead report, and if necessary, will request referals and/or SA.

i have thought a lot about the SA and have now come to realise that if he needs it, and if reports/thoughts are sugesting so, i would be more than willing to start the process, and if things dont imrove in a few years, at least he will have more options available to him for more help.

thankyou everyone for your advise and input, i will update once the pead has been, and i arrange a meeting with senco and teacher. xxx
