My son has school refused for the last few year. With me often getting him there by dinnertime. He's a nightmare when he gets home obviously taking whats left of the day out on us. He also refuses to go to bed and often wakes through the night crying and saying no school. He refuses to dress, which also is a seperate issue.
Anyway, just wondering how, who and what will help??

dd used to be like this at her previous school, so I really feel for you and your ds.

In the end, we took her out and Home Educated her for a while, before finding the great school she's at now. We still have problems, but it's far better.

Not suggesting this is the right route for you and your ds -I know it's not for everyone.
We were going through CAMHS at that time and we had an Ed Psych involved. CAMHS offered to sort out something called 'hospital at school' (or something like that) where dd attended school but was given lessons on her own, in an environment she was comfortable in.

What kind of support does school offer you and your ds? Do they have any strategies in place?

school are not helpful with anything, he is in a special school, the only school in the borough suitable! In fact we are just starting to go through mediation due to the problems we have encountered with the school. So no strategies in place either. Sorry not much help.

Oh, no, that's awful for you.
I'm probably telling you stuff you already know, but have you been in touch with Parent Partnership?

How old is your ds?

I know what a horrible situation it is -it took over our whole life.

Do you mind me asking what your son's dx is?

devientenigma · 16/09/2010 09:46

My son is primarily down syndrome, sld, spd, sight and hearing, mobility issues, seizures, dx traits of adhd, asd, ocd and odd. He is nearly 10. I was in touch with parent partnership a few year back, maybe I should try again.

My dd is also nearly 10 and has AS, OCD, SPD AND dyspraxia. The overlaps with your ds are interesting - I only say this because the parts of her dx which caused the most problems were the SPD and OCD. School, without the right support and strategies, was a minefield.

Sorry, not sure if your son is verbal? Is he able to tell you what in particular he dislikes at school?
If not, I can tell you what dd used to struggle with. Of course, they will be different to your ds but might give you a bit of insight?
