Showing skin as a Sikh bride

Hi all. I’m getting married next year. We will be have an English-Punjabi infusion wedding. Fiancé is white Christian, so we will be have a ceremony in a CoE church followed by our reception - we will scatter Punjabi traditions out throughout the day followed by a blessing at the guruwara at some point.

I will be wearing a white dress for the church and plan to wear Indian for the reception.

I’m really liking lenghas . But I’m really gravitating to styles which show your midriff. I have no problem with this. But I don’t know if it is just my family being strict but I can’t say I’ve ever seen a Sikh bride expose their midriffs. My mum has always been quite strict with skirt lengths etc so I know she would not be happy. But that’s beside the point.

Does anyone have experience with this?

I would not be showing my midriff in a sikh temple. Cover with your chuni or go for a long top.

the midriff would not be out at the church or temple. Only the reception

It’s no issue at the reception!
most people that wear saree or lenghas will have their midriff out
if you’ve got it girl, why the hell not!

I wonder why my family is so weird then cause midriff out is definitely not the done thing. my dad’s side is more conservative ie they don’t let their daughters cut their hair/wear it loose. My sister and I are strong willed so we tore him down on his old fashioned ways

Oh and when I say midriff I mean MIDRIFF. Not just a slither between the top and bottom that is covered by a chuni

I wish I was Indian...that's beautiful!

I wouldn’t worry too much about showing skin at the reception. Most weddings I’ve been to recently the tops are like bras!

I don’t know the answer to your question OP but that is absolutely spectacular!!

I personally wouldn't, I'd customise that top to be longer but it is a beautiful lengha.

My dad and guests don't need to see my belly as it would put them off their dinner & my husband can see it later!

Stunning

i just think there’s a lot of “embarrassment” that the generations carry

older ladies in my famiky told me to not look so happy / dance too much at my wedding… so I went and got in the stage and danced 😂😂

you gotta break them out of their ways at some point. It’s not like you have your cleavage out or wearing a bra.
