Health/general insurance for relatives from India visiting UK

Hello, looking for some advice - MIL is coming from India for 2 months for her annual visit and I've been saying to DH we should sort health insurance for her to cover her for her stay. She is UK-born and has indefinite leave to remain but as she isn't resident here and hasn't been for over 30 years, so she doesn't have the right to free NHS treatment (she thinks she does but I have cross-checked on various government websites and she is not entitled to it).
Can any of you who have parents/PILs who visit from India advise on what you do for insurance?
My mil and DH are a bit useless at this kind of thing and they think I'm being difficult by bringing it up, but if she had a medical emergency and wasn't covered, it could be financially disastrous for us. DH earns reasonably well and has a good job but he's not very financially savvy and I do most of the family finances and admin.
Can anyone recommend any legit online insurance companies or comparison sites that can help? MIL won't be able to fill the forms in as she has never really learned how to use a computer (although she is 70 andd degree educated, but my late FIL handled all the finances and life admin... I guess it's not unusual in that generation) and she doesn't believe in insurance anyway, so we'd have to do it remotely from UK.
Please any practical tips for navigating this would be so much appreciated... I'm being characterised as the money-grabbing Westernised DIL from hell for even raising this but I'm literally just thinking about MILs welfare and our financial stability🤯 #cantdoanythingright

I have a similar concern. Following this thread for any suggestions or advice.

Generally you have to buy the insurance from your country of origin, so something like this:

www.tataaig.com/travel-insurance/travel-insurance-united-kingdom

Obviously I haven't used it being British myself.

There's quite a few options but make sure any preexisting condition is fully disclosed or it isn't worth the paper it's written on.

@mitogoshi thanks for the suggestion, we will look into that

@TheColourOutOfSpace I will keep you posted on what else we find. Right now Policy Bazaar (Indian insurance price comparison site) looks promising

Thanks @Olinguita . I hadn't heard of Policy Bazaar. I'll look it up as well. I think from my previous brief investigation, the policy had to be paid for by an Indian credit/debit card and I couldn't do it from here.

Olinguita · 06/08/2024 11:48

@TheColourOutOfSpace ah I see... We would have to find a workaround to that if you need an Indian card.. My husband does still have one I think.
There must be so many British Asian families who need to sort out insurance policies for visiting elder relatives that there is surely consumer demand for a product that can be set up and paid for in the UK. Someone in the insurance or fintech industry needs to get on to this 🤔

It's down to where the risk is unfortunately. As your MIL is normally resident in India the risk is deemed to be based in India, so it makes it difficult for a UK company to underwrite policies there - unless they have permission to do so from the Indian authority. It's not down to appetite, it's down to regulatory red tape!

All sorted - policy purchased via Policy Bazaar from the Indian division of a globally known insurance provider.
A bit tricky to organise from the UK for a relative still in India as the insurance company had to call MIL to verify various details (which she was not best pleased about) in order to provide the policy, and it had to be paid for with an Indian bank card (couldn't use the UK one) but DH figured it out in the end and MiL is now covered... Phew!
I'm still a bit annoyed I had to poke and prod MIL and DH to take out insurance but I think it was the best financial choice for us as a family and it gives me a bit of peace of mind...

Thank you for the update! Good to know it is now sorted for you and your family.

Unfortunately I think you’ll find that most avail themselves of nhs services in this situation without declaring their ineligibility.
