Hello Everyone,

Would anyone mind sharing how they celebrate Diwali in their family, with small children? Are there any children’s story books you would recommend that help children understand more about the significance of Diwali?

Hi,

I think coming up with educational games to play has always worked quite well for me and my family.

Recently we've been playing games like this: https://amritainkwell.etsy.com/listing/1589096886 (but better suited to older kids) - you might find something similar that suits younger kids better.

We decorate the house the night before and the kids get a few little gifts each (paints/glitter/new outfit)
They love drawing pictures of fireworks/ candles and arranging the divas'. We also do a buffet type meal in the evening. I have massive issues with noise sensitivity so we don't do fireworks ourselves just a few sparklers- we have one or two neighbours that do fireworks so I let the kids watch with their dad from the garden while I hide inside lol

Aw lovely ideas - thank you both for sharing.

Hi! My friend published this range. There is a Diwali story in it.

We always decorated the house with candles. Got some lanterns to hang up, and made special food like cakes, Farsi puri, etc, which they could help make.

We were also involved with temple activities, so the kids also took part in dramas, etc.

Whatever you decide, have a very Happy Diwali 🪔

Hi there, this is the first year my daughter will be old enough to understand a bit about Diwali, so I'm planning on making a rangoli with her using stencils and powder, and lighting some diyas to put outside the house. She's little so is probably going to get it mixed up with a Halloween pumpkin but we've got to start somewhere 😄

We've got this book off Amazon, which she likes, so we'll read that again a few times. There's a Ramayana one in the same series too which is also good but better for slightly older kids, say about 6/7. Let's Celebrate 5 Days of Diwali!... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1945792051?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I'm also doing a session on Diwali with my Brownies unit - plan is to wear a sari (it's sparkly, they'll love it), read them the story above for context, have them paint some clay diyas and then learn to tie saris by wrapping up a couple of the other leaders. Should be fun!
