Fighting off diabetes even when slim-ish

Are any of you in this position thanks to our terrible genes and carb heavy diets?:) Interested to hear about your journeys. I am 50, am 5"7 and a size 10-12, so hardly huge, but was diagnosed as pre-diabetic two years ago. I reduced all rice and rotis, cut out sugar completely, and am now normal. But I realise it's going to be an ongoing battle because my family is full of relatively slim diabetics.

I find doing without rice really incredibly hard. Have replaced it with substitutes like quinoa, cauli rice, bulgur wheat and so, but still dream of it sometimes...

Hey @JanisMoplin - I find the biggest thing that helps me feel full is fatty fish, then I don’t need so much rice.

Unfortunately I am veggie and don't eat meat or fish ( unless I am travelling and can't find an option). I do eat eggs and a lot of lentils though.

Have you tried switching to brown basmati rice? It has slower carbs so you feel full longer, and often need less for a portion size.

Yes, brown basmati rice does help. Plus increasing the proportions of lentils and vegetables in a meal. It's not easy though 😫

I’m glad you posted this as I’m in exactly the same position or expect to be when I reach that age (I’m early 40s).
family full of slim diabetics here too, and almost accepted it as my fate.
I went on one of those MN chats some time ago with a diabetes expert and asked a similar question - if you’re already slim how can you lose weight to counter diabetes?
his answer was - you need to try and get back to the weight you were at 21.
for me that was 7 stone! I’m now 9 stone and 5’5”. So that’s not happening.

Heh. I don't think that's possible for me. When I was 21, I weighed about 48 kilos and was pretty underweight, even though I ate 3 meals a day. There is only so much one can do.

I found the only way is intermittent fasting. I do 16:8 regularly. I'm 55, and a size 8 - 10, both parents were diabetic yet slim. I do have the occasional treat of it's worth it, but not often

brighteyesburninglikefire · 21/07/2022 00:00

Also
5 ft 5, and at 21 I weighed 9 stones.now more like 10, but with lots of weight training, so hopefully a bit more muscle, but I do have tummy blobbiness that I can't seem to shift 🤨

Snoopsnoggysnog · 21/07/2022 09:27

I would like to lose half a stone but there is no way I need to be 7 stone again.
how often do you do intermittent fasting? I’ve never tried it. I really need to eat in the morning.
