16 month old delayed communication

Hi I’m really just writing this in the hope that Someone can relate , I actually posted on mumsent when my ds was 10 months old because he was quite behind in sitting , rolling ect but he seemed to quickly catch up so I stopped worrying now however he is 16 months and although he’s walking and his motor skills are great he isn’t communicating with us at all. He doesn’t wave , point or clap he doesn’t shake or nod his head , he seems very uninterested in playing with me and only uses me for comfort . He rarely turns to his name and tends to ignore me most of the time and certainly isn’t interested in any things I want to show / teach him . He gets absorbed in stacking cups he can sort and stack 10 cups of various sizes by himself and will do this for ages but doesn’t have the urge to knock them down . My friends have babies who are 4 months younger and the difference is very noticeable . He’s been referred for a second hearing test because he doesn’t respond to his name and they couldn’t get a result from the first one, they have told me to go back to the hv once I have the results. I feel in my gut and always have that something is up and now I just want answers and some information on how I can support him , I’ve become impatient and I’m worried sick which I know is getting me no where :( .

Hi Op
I’ve just come across your post. So sorry you have received no responses. How are things?

ttrrii · 07/10/2021 18:22

@Squigglebug How is your son doing now?

CowboyJo · 28/02/2022 19:48

I'm sorry Squigglebug but this sounds like your DS may have autism. Sad

I would get him checked out.

Hi , I think you need to speak to your GP or health visitor so you can be refer to the right people, you're child sounds like he has autism cos he display classic signs unfortunately hearing or visual issues children still can point and have non verbal communication whereas you said he ignored you , I'm sorry you're going through this it can be a very confusing time

Hello,

I couldn't read and run, yes they are signs of autism but that doesn't mean he has it. Do you have an update? I know this was a while ago.

Rainbowdrops2021 · 19/01/2023 11:41

I’ve just realised someone asked if I had an update and I do. My ds is now 4 1/2 and he has been diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay.

He attended a fantastic specialist pre school setting and we used lots of methods to help bring along his communication and understanding, he is now 4 1/2 and in a mainstream setting (for now) with an ehcp. He has an above average reading level, is an absolute maths wizz (does all of his times tables and can add and subtract small numbers), he is writing at an expected level and this week we have gone 4 days without pull ups with no accidents at school.
He does struggle with friendships as his understanding of communication is quite delayed and he has little to no danger awareness but we are working on that. Despite all of the hurdles he has faced he is a happy, loving little boy that is determined and makes us proud every single day and I wouldn’t change him for the world.
