Buttons or Poppers for pyjamas?

Hey! I’m developing a children’s sleepwear brand and I’m interested in finding out what you prefer on toddler pyjamas. Sizes for toddler pyjamas from start from 12 months up to 8 years. A long sleeve pyjama top with a separate bottom. I’m deciding between buttons or snaps/poppers for the top. What do you think your child would prefer especially if they get dressed by themselves? Do you find buttons to be a hazard or perfectly fine? I’m looking to meet the needs of parents/children while meeting high safety standards. Thank you in advance :)

I don’t think the issue is the hazard with buttons, it’s that many parents prefer a stretch fabric top that pulls over the head. This is the easiest to put on and takeoff and the child is more likely to be able to do it themselves.

Neither, just a long sleeved top to put on over the childs head.

I never had any PJs with either buttons or poppers for my children. Just preferred a t-shirt type top, either short or long sleeved. I didn't have an issue with buttons from a safety point of view, just from an ease and comfort point of view I'd rather not have any buttons or poppers at all.

We always had stretchy jersey too partly because of the lack of buttons and poppers and partly because IMO they are comfier, I can't get on with cotton button down ones at all, not enough stretch and draughty round the waist if you lie on your side. Although DD did have a little brushed cotton pair with poppers that someone gave her and she was very fond of for a couple of years I would never have bought them myself.

Yep, neither until a child is old enough to do the buttons or poppers themselves.

Cocktailsandcheese · 12/01/2026 21:12

Neither. We just use Jersey PJs that are stretchy and comfy. We were gifted some button up PJs one Christmas but they've never been worn as they just aren't as comfy

Nurseposter123 · 12/01/2026 21:24

Neither -- like everyone else says, just stretchy fabric.

Honestly I avoid all clothes with buttons or poppers. In summary we are all looking for the least complicated option!

If its a material that needs fasteners then poppers. However, if doing rompers for babies/toddlers please do a zip instead where the nappy area is. It's so hard trying to do it back up after changing a nappy in the middle of the night.

Poppers all day long for me as they’re less fiddly.

good luck with brand. Hope all goes well

Merino wool for us. She sleeps so much better in it as it’s breathable and adjusts to the temperature easier (house is too old to have a consistent temperature). Currently there are only 3 brands I found offering this age 2/3 and I’d like if they did more tops and leggings without poppers in the 2-3 year old range. However, no idea of the market for it as it was recommended to me by a Norwegian friend and otherwise would never have known. Superlove is the biggest dedicated one but I got some nice examples form H&M (they just sold out.)

CraftyWasp · 12/01/2026 23:11

Ideally footless, hoodless onsies with a zip down the back (we have a houdini child who strips in the night)

I get all my merino wool tops/leggings for me and my children from lindex. It’s really good value and lasts for ages. I wear mine to bed!!

I like proper button cotton pjs but only after they're potty trained so 2 plus. Before that they're always in rompers, without feet from 9months or so, zip, buttons or snaps i don't mind.

Gentlydoesit2 · 13/01/2026 04:38

Poppers but ideally nothing! Pull straight on

Emmz1510 · 13/01/2026 08:30

No buttons at all, just a stretchy neck, possibly envelope style like on some vests?

Iocanepowder · 13/01/2026 08:34

Agree with nothing.

We currently just have normal pull on pajamas for our 5 year old and 2 year old.

My 5 year old wouldn’t be able to do buttons or poppers by himself. Probably not anytime soon tbh.

My 2 year old wriggles and tries to escape when i get her changed so definitely nothing to fasten.

Don’t buy any pjs with buttons as an adult either as they come undone during the night.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/01/2026 08:56

Also agree with nothing.
