Hello everyone,

I hope you're all doing well!
I'm in the early stages of planning a small-scale catering business from my home kitchen, and I would really appreciate some advice and insights from the community, specially people who can relate or share personal experiences.

Before I get properly started, I have a few concerns and would love your input:

What are the key food safety and hygiene standards I must meet when operating from a home kitchen?

Are there any specific certifications or inspections I need to pass before launching?

I live in a 3 bed flat, me and my husband with 2 kids under 9. My first concer is to get food business authorisation from my landlord. Do you think it's difficult being in a flat?

What equipment or kitchen upgrades (if any) would you recommend for handling small catering orders efficiently?

As per hygiene and safety, I do have a sink and a dishwasher , is that enough to maintain good hygiene while handling food?

I am going to be pre-orders only and all the ingredients required will be brought in freshly , so my concern is that will I still need a fridge/freezer for my business inspections ? As I am in a flat and we only have 1 small fridge/freezer that we use for our household, I would love to keep that away from being part of my business ( less contamination worries) so if that's even remotely possible?

For delivery, I'm starting from a very local approach and will be delivering myself to the addresses, is there anything that I need to be careful for in this area? I think someone told me the "traffic" is one of the key components when getting business approval from landlord.

As per allergens, I am very careful of contamination. All my ingredients and spices are well labelled and secured in separate containers oro ziplocks and also my food labels are well clear about the presence of traces ( as its a high probability while working in a small space) and also I will be verbally reminding the customers.

For those who have experience, what common challenges should I expect when running a home-based food business?

Thank you so much in advance for supporting my little dream!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

I think the very first thing you need to do is talk with your landlord and see if the premises can allow such activity to happen , it may have restrictions / restrictive covenants in place that prevent this

from what I can remember you may need a separate sink for hand washing , flooring must be clean , cleanable and non slip , there usually are guidelines if you google your local council and look at their guidelines for small catering businesses and see what is required particular to your council ,

before you start you will need an up to date food handling cert , public liability insurance and possibly business insurance on your car if you are using it for the business.

much much more to it than I have mentioned but there’s are just a few things that popped into my head
