Has anyone had success selling a course online?

Hi all,

I just wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I have an idea for an online course, and I just did some training about making and selling an online course, but of course it was largely trying to sell the creator's own AI produced material.

Obviously it's going to sound like I'm jumping on a bandwagon, but I would like to create a genuine course.

The tutor today was explaining how she has made millions in online sales I'm this way. But of course it begs the question why would she want to coach a newbie like me of she already has millions made.

Please be gentle, I'm just trying to find a role for myself.

Thank you.

I used to listen to a podcast called “the online course guy”. That and maybe some books could be good starting points. Or try to look for a udemy course.

my husband did create an online course but did not get a single sale. Online marketing is really hard.

How would people find your course? That's the key question

She's made millions in online sales* by convincing people to sign up for her course on "making millions in online sales". It's like one of those serpents that eats itself.

*except she hasn't made millions really, it's all smoke and mirrors to get you to sign up to her course!

You know it's a scam right?

TotallyTwisted · 30/12/2024 22:20

What's your idea? Are you already an expert in the field?

HobnobsChoice · 30/12/2024 22:25

She made her 'millions" selling the training you did, not any actual materials she has produced.r. It's the new form of mlm, digital passive income/digital marketing/master resale rights. Often pushed as empowering women.

If you have a genuinely good idea for a course and have thoroughly researched it, tested it and can market it effectively then try it, but don't expect it to come easily or make loads. And definitely don't give this woman anymore money!

It depends what you mean by an "online course". If it's throwing together a set of materials that people pay to work through on their own whilst you take a back seat, then the market is quite limited and it has to be exceptional quality and/or an in-demand niche not currently served by someone with a reputation in that area. Find a serviced platform and go for it, but it'll need a lot of marketing.

The value (and revenue) is in the combined training-mentoring product. And you really, really need to know your stuff.

Aimed at adults or children? Children's tutoring or hobby courses can be sold pre-recorded (with an offer of remote support) through platforms such as Outschool, but I get the impression that most people prefer lives.

I run a successful online course - it includes live elements and recorded elements.

you have to pick a subject that you know inside out, that you can teach credibly.
The creation of the course is the easy part. Selling it is where the real work comes in.
you need an audience of the right people to sell it to.
thats where you have to focus your efforts initially - building up and finding that audience.

(your mentor has made her money from selling her course to people like you. She needs newbies like you in order to make her money.)

John Williams of The Ideas Lab runs an excellent course on creating, marketing and selling your own online course. He has coached and mentored lots of people into having successful online courses (although "making millions" from it is very unlikely!) Having done one of his programmes myself I really recommend him.
