Hey fellow MN's..

Kinda throwing this out there. I've been told on many occasion that I should become some sort of online creator. I balance life of being a single parent if 4, two baby daddies to manage, a teenager, a narcissistic mother, a father who has early dementia and now I'm hitting the menopause... A recipe for a complete breakdown but I'm more of a laugh it off kind of person. And with that outlook I come across very well and with humour... It probably helps cope with the madness. Would this be something I could turn into a blog, or a content creator? I've been thinking of researching and done a bit. A lot of 'mum' contents out there... I'm wondering what would make me different? Anyone any good with the social platforms of today?

Just found out one of our neighbours makes a good living from a children's Youtube channel, so it seems it's possible. Until I found out I thought he was trading cars, always wheeling and dealing on his phone in the garden.😂

I think you have to be lucky and hit a note that people find appealing, so easy to be boring, patronising or any other sort of off putting.

Would the family be happy to be the objects of your creations?

I think a blog would be hard to monetise long term.

If it’s something you want to do for a bit of fun and potentially monetise later, I’d look at video platforms: YouTube and/or short form stuff like TikTok or YouTube shorts.

Assume few people will see your stuff for a long time. Don’t worry about being boring, patronising or generally shit. It’s a long game. Consistency is key and you’ll get better. You don’t need a niche to get started. You’ll find your voice along the way.

Assume it’ll take a year or two to get any kind of sizable audience and monetise.
Post a video weekly.
First few weeks are just learning how to come up with topics, speak to camera, edit etc.
You can accelerate this progress with free courses - I think Ali Abdaal has some good ones.
Use Skillshare to learn how to edit, market etc

If you like it, decide you want to invest and want to increase your chance of success: get good audio and a good camera . An iPhone 15 is good enough for almost everyone. With good audio and a good camera you’ll be ahead of most!

In summary, it’s possible, is a significant time commitment and a highly competitive market. But, could be fun, you’ll learn some valuable skills and will probably embarrass the kids that their mum is a famous YouTuber.

Sorry, iPhone 15 is good enough for recording, but not for audio. You’ll need an external mic for audio.

The wife of one of my clients makes the mythical mn six figures from tik tok. She has 4 kids but she doesn’t post parenting advice the like, rather “funny” stuff from her household / daily life. It’s inane in the extreme. The trick is to grow a following.

tik tok is definitely the easiest platform to monetise. Followed by YouTube

Thank you so much guys. Positive feedback and good info. It might just be I be myself and like you say, be consistent. Can easily start at once a week and go from there. I've only an iPhone 13 but maybe have some cash to upgrade early. Not long left... Again, thank you!
