New client wants to use my consultation services, they’re based in Sydney, I’m in London. Small values only involved … £110 £70 etc. How do I get them to pay?

I’m a small biz owner.

PayPal can be used from many countries, not sure about Australia. Check the fees though

The people I invoice in the US just do a bank transfer in £. Be careful of fees though, check with your bank.

It's easy to get foreign clients to pay into your regular bank account - you need your IBAN number from your bank, and add the details to your invoices. As someone said though, watch for fees as they'll take a percentage - but I used to build in extra to cover that, so that you receive the actual amount you're owed.

Sorry - just checked my invoices from when I was doing this - I also had my swift code / bank identification code (BIC) on there as well, not sure which ones overkill but add all of them and you'll be safe!

Get an hsbc global walllet account you can pay and receive like a local in a range of currencies including aud

Sorry fixed cost £5

Cookerhood · 12/09/2023 21:57

Yes, I had all of those on there as well. If you invoice them in £ they should be able to send you the correct amount with the fees taken off at their end. If you invoice in Australian $ your bank will charge an exchange fee. Just ask your bank.

My business bank account doesn't charge extra for receiving a payment from a foreign account, if they send it in pounds. Alternatively a PayPal invoice, also issued in pounds, is an option.

cringy · 18/09/2023 14:27

Thank you all.

I’ll look into the PayPal option…

I have a Revolut business account, and everyone just pays me in whatever currency is convenient

They should be paying your directly into your bank account in GBP same as any other client, just give them the international version of your bank account details (IBAN and SWIFT BIC). Fees/conversion is their problem not yours.

I recommend clients to use Wise.com because it has low fees and decent conversion rates and it is virtually instantaneous but it's up to the client what they do.

(I have many clients in Australia due to living there for several years).
