Unless you can find something UK based but fully remote first or you’re content to be a SAHP then I’d honestly refuse to move. In fact I’d probably strongly consider refusing full stop. Whitehaven doesn’t have the best reputation and I can’t imagine what job your wife has lined up that could make having to live there, combined with uprooting the family and screwing your career even close to worth it.

declutteringmymind · 02/10/2022 09:42

@quadri.

We are not recruitment consultants.

You might need one to get a job, or get on linkd in.

Hoppinggreen · 02/10/2022 09:48

So basically don’t do it

KittyCatsby · 02/10/2022 10:18

@Hoppinggreen

Agree with you.

@Quadri

There must be other areas of the UK you have thought about relocating to ?
I can assure you there will be better prospects , better job opportunities , better living conditions , better education for your children than Whitehaven .

OutDamnedSpot · 02/10/2022 12:32

This is a great find. It’s about as ‘professional’ as jobs get in that area. If salary etc are below your expectations, you need to give up on working in Whitehaven area.

Quadri · 02/10/2022 13:50

@Redburnett a lot below actually. Will find something suitable otherwise consider some own work.

Hoppinggreen · 02/10/2022 15:08

Have you actually done any research whatsoever before deciding to make this quite major move??
You really sound clueless and if your wife is as daft as you I fear for your children.
If you need more salary than that you will be broke, cold and bored very quickly in Whitehaven. I’m sure it has some good points but if I was making a list of places in The UK for someone with your needs and background to move to it wouldn’t make the top 50

Waterfallgirl · 02/10/2022 15:19

Without being nosey, is your wife working locally ? Other than Sellafield / something in specialist healthcare / surgeon I cannot think of another employer that would attract someone who is already a high earner in the Middle East. (Assuming that your wife is a high earner given you are moving for her career.)

Quadri · 02/10/2022 16:14

@Waterfallgirl healthcare, yes better career prospects for our children though the main focus.

GiltEdges · 02/10/2022 16:18

You’re not really answering anyone’s questions properly OP, but why Whitehaven?

I know somebody who relocated there as he was an officer with the nuclear constabulary at Sellafield. For all the reasons mentioned above, I absolutely wouldn’t recommend it for you and your family.

snowspider · 02/10/2022 16:34

I think you would be looking to to get a job based in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Glasgow etc with remote or hybrid working but you sound totally naive and like cps can't imagine the upheaval you are are considering would have commensurate benefits for work/life balance

snowspider · 02/10/2022 16:46

You need to look at different type of website maybe something like this

www.modis.com/en-gb/career-services/job/glasgow/sap-senior-manager/BROADBEAN_419051664274428/?location=Glasgow

Quadri · 02/10/2022 17:07

Thanks to everyone, very supportive forum, quite helpful.

OutDamnedSpot · 02/10/2022 17:09

For all of the reasons above, could your wife explore her options further? For example, sellafield also has an office in Warrington. Could she negotiate to spend most of her time there (opening up jobs in Manchester for you) and a day a week at the main site?

Quveas · 02/10/2022 17:15

I can tell you for an absolute certainty that you will have neither better educational nor career prospects for your children in Whitehaven. And quite possibly not a lot of other prospects either. Mixed race children are very few and far between, and you've already been warned that this is not the most enlightened part of the UK. Have you given any thought to what you are putting them through? If you wife is in healthcare there are absolutely nowhere in the UK that isn't screaming out for more healthcare workers - there are almost no places you couldn't go where she couldn't find decent work, and which would be better for you to find work and for your children.

CumbrianExile · 02/10/2022 17:24

As a former West Cumbrian I have to agree with all of the above comments. In particular the lack of diversity up there. And the attitude to strangers!

I would really think about why you want to move up there!

KittyCatsby · 02/10/2022 17:29

Seriously suggest before you give up everything you currently have where you live ( home , jobs, children's education ) you book 4/6 weeks airbnb in Whitehaven and come to get a feel for the place yourself .

CaptainSamCarter · 02/10/2022 17:32

I live near there. It's not as bad as people are making out. It has a pretty good road links for a start.

Sellafield is a major employer, but there are also loads of companies linked to it that operate in the area. There's a big strive to attract more business to the area with a focus on it being Britain's "energy coast".

You might find it's actually pretty easy to get a job here as long as you don't limit yourself to just Whitehaven. Husband runs a tech company and they struggle to recruit from the local population because of the skills needed and so they have recruited from all over the world.

If your wife is happy to commute, I'd look at living Cockermouth. It's 30 minutes from Whitehaven hospital in the car, and the schools are very good.

KittyCatsby · 02/10/2022 17:42

@CaptainSamCarter

Road links to where ? Workington maybe.
Can I ask where you go for your shopping ? A day out with the girls ? A night out at the theatre ? Take the kids to a decent pantomime ? Have a day out at a museum or a great full day out with the family ?

OutDamnedSpot · 02/10/2022 17:44

To be clear, I LOVE West Cumbria. I don’t think it is ‘bad’ at all. I just don’t think it’s going to suit the OP’s career aims.

Somewhereoverthepacific · 02/10/2022 17:45

OP what visa will you be on (assuming you're not British) - will you have the right to work in the UK? I'm not really on top of skilled worker visas (assuming your wife isn't British) but from an initial look it seems that the partner can't work and you'd need to get a work visa yourself. I might be wrong but definitely something to look into.

ohidoliketobe · 02/10/2022 17:50

BAE Systems in Barrow is probably just over an hour commute from Whitehaven. But there's security clearances and other issues to consider due to the nature of the work.

KittyCatsby · 02/10/2022 17:50

@CaptainSamCarter and

As an example if we want a decent choice of food shops , we go to Carlisle or Penrith which is a 60 mile round trip to each. If we want to go to a Waitrose , it's Hexham , an 120 mile round trip . No John Lewis in Cumbria . If you are into buying clothes you might get something in Carlisle , if not it's Newcastle or perhaps even Glasgow all 100+ miles one way.

pompomdaisy · 02/10/2022 17:56

I'm from Cumbria and no way on earth would I move there. I would live in Cockermouth or the Lakes and send kids to Keswick or cockermouth.
