Hi Everyone,

I'm new to Mumsnet, so bare with me :)
I've got my own cake making business and I was just wondering if someone would give me an opinion on how it looks on Insta (mysweetpandemonium_cakes) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/Sweet-Pandemonium-107508398588065)
Be brutally honest!!

Thanks

Looks good. You wanted brutally honest so I'm being fussy here.. I'd not put your gas hob in the photos, be more careful where you are taking the pictures. Also the Lion one is not your finest work, the writing looks messy. This was a couple of years ago no by the looks of it so I'd loose it.

Your cakes look good. But your photos of things aren’t great.
If your taking a picture of a cake for instagram for a business, it doesn’t look very professional having wrappings, jars of stuff, furniture and general kitchen clutter in the background.

You need to clear an area so the background has nothing in it or a blank fake background, and then stage your products

CandyLeBonBon · 17/04/2022 19:41

Op I'm a professional commercial and product photographer and learning how to position and light your products is the single most important thing you can do to present your work in a way that looks most appealing.

You're shooting everything from above eye level in uneven lighting in your kitchen.

Go to hobbycraft and get a couple of large white poly boards. Find a north facing window and shoot in portrait mode if you have an iPhone (or whatever the equivalent is in android) crop to square. Avoid too much contrast.

drpet49 · 17/04/2022 19:46

I don’t like the fake backgrounds, makes it look naff

TwinklyBranch · 17/04/2022 19:49

Your cakes look good, but you might want to rethink the name - pandemonium doesn't say well organised and successful business to me! I'm assuming it's maybe a song lyric or something, if so it's gone right over my head!

Nomunkat · 17/04/2022 19:51

Love all your cakes except the lion, the ice lolly and the christmas cupcakes.

You are very talented! I would just work on taking better pictures (better lighting and angle, consistent unicolor/white background) and add relevant hashtags for future customers to be able to find you easily

lemmein · 17/04/2022 19:53

I'd buy something like this for your pics:

SAMTIAN Portable Light Tent 16''x16''x16'' Photo Light Box Studio Shooting Tent with 6 Background Papers for Photography https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B077HSWCXF/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_5KP9A3CCK86D287W67P9

Love your cakes they looks fabulous! Remember to put your location in your Instagram bio, mix up your content with some videos, keep your background clear so that it doesn't detract from your lovely cakes. Also, once you get enough content create some Instagram highlights of the different types of cakes you have done i.e. birthday cakes, wedding cakes, baby shower cakes.

DelilahBucket · 17/04/2022 20:05

If I was looking for a local cake maker I would look on Google rather than social media so get yourself set up on there and I would want to see you screaming from the rooftops about your credentials - qualifications, insurance, food hygiene first and foremost. Good luck!

mnnewbie111 · 17/04/2022 22:26

I can't see the lion so assuming that's been deleted. I think all those there look fab! I would book you xx

It's the lion king red and orange one
Nomunkat · 17/04/2022 22:57

I would make your instagram bio a bit clearer to read. Bullet points and colorful descriptions are ideal and eye catching.

Something along the lines of :

🍰 Freshly baked goods for all your events

● Cupcakes, Party cakes & wedding cakes (or whatever your niche is)
● 1 week turnaround
● Your approximate location
● Links to your other social media

Thanks so much for your feedback everyone. I know the Lion King cake wasn't my best but I've improved since then :D
Ill be honest, I'm pretty new to social media and I agree that some of the photos aren't brilliant and should have a better background but I've heard people say that most customers want to see homemade settings, rather than a staged one (shrug)

Yes ofcourse!

MarmiteCoriander · 17/04/2022 23:15

I'm unsure what your comments on your own cakes refer to, nor do they come across as professional 'I’ll be honest, I can’t remember what was in it but it was utterly adorbs '!!!! Hmm

Sorry, but adorbs??? Unless I was 12 and buying a cake, I wouldn't know what you mean. As an adult, looking for a professional cake baker- I'd be put off by the juvenile comments. There was another with dreadful writing, it wasn't clear exactly what had been written on the cake, but your own comment was that it was that persons last birthday on earth! This was even worse, to think that was their last cake, yet the writing wasn't the best and messy.

You did ask for honest opinions. Some look nice OP, but you need polishing.

Atpeaceallthetime · 17/04/2022 23:26

@DelilahBucket - Added :)

The Friends cake is very good so you've clearly got talent. Your page needs some tidying up though, it comes across as a little haphazard and not very professional. I'd advise you take a look at some bakery pages on Facebook and Instagram and see how they've laid theirs out.

NormaLouiseBates · 17/04/2022 23:28

This one is an actual bakery but to give you an idea:

www.facebook.com/hivebakery/

I'd post my own but I don't want to out myself 😂

NormaLouiseBates · 17/04/2022 23:30

The strawberry cake too is excellent!

Atpeaceallthetime · 17/04/2022 23:45

@NormaLouiseBates-hanks so much for that. I've looked at the page you sent and it''s lovely!! I definitely need a place to take photos of my cakes when they're done!!

@MarmiteCoriander - Adorbs means adorable. That lady loved that cake, she really loved all of it. If you could have seen her face, it was all lit up because she wasn't expecting it. I'm just glad I made her smile.

Looks lovely. Just a small thing - your profile pic isn’t clear when viewed on a phone. A simple logo would be better.

Atpeaceallthetime · 17/04/2022 23:58

@DesidaCrick- Thanks for letting me know. Is that on FB or Insta?
