Handwriting Books are so dull

TomSB1423 · 21/05/2020 21:10

So in college I created a creative handwriting book for children because I remember going through primary school and hating practising my handwriting. However, now I have made it I'm not sure where to go from here and was wondering if I could get some ideas of what to do now from you guys.

You can view my book using the link below however am not promoting it for people to buy it! I am only looking for input on what to do next. :)

Haven't clicked as I see zero benefits from handwriting books. In France, we have a quite unique cursive style which you learn from day 1 and from day 1 at school, every day at home you copy a couple of lines in your textbook, the add more lines as the year goes on until you copy almost a page. In addition to copying, you also have to write your own text.
When we moved to Australia, I was quite surprised to discover you learn handwriting during most years of primary school, whereas in France it is done and dusted after the first year.
Handwriting is like irregular French verbs and abs. 10 minutes a day is way better than 1 hour sessions here and there.

@LeGrandBleu Interesting, I agree with what you are saying. I have tried to make my book less like a handwriting book and more like an interactive playbook in which you can explore your thoughts and also develop your handwriting. Thanks for your comment, it has given me a new insight into what other places implement themselves!!

I have clicked- are you aware of the numerous typos/misspellings on your page advertising the book?
What do you mean by ‘what to do next?’

TomSB1423 · 21/05/2020 22:33

@Nighttimenope Ahh yes, I am aware, the website is only to showcase the book as I was not sure on how to give you guys an example of it. It was made quickly and I do apologise for the rushed website. I was not intending to sell the book on the website yet.

👍🏻
I still amn’t sure what you mean by your question of what to do next?

I think there needs to be a space between the lines. As it is, letters going down could hit letters going up on the following line.

Nice idea, though.

VashtaNerada · 22/05/2020 06:26

I teach handwriting and the children do get bored with it so I think it’s a lovely idea. It’s probably better suited to Y2/Y3 ish as my Y1s are mainly doing basic letter formation and there isn’t huge amounts of room for creativity (I might be wrong!) @LeGrandBleu it is only a very short lesson but an important one I think. When they start Y1 lots of children write in a way that can’t be read by themselves or others. By the end of the year I can actually read everyone’s work! It’s not just about looking nice but about being able to share your work with a reader.

LeGrandBleu · 22/05/2020 07:42

@VashtaNerada don't get me wrong, handwriting is very important and we even use fountain pen to learn to write and handwriting is practised every single day at school and at home.
Students write a lot more, from the poem they need to memorise, to the daily homework they have to copy in their diary and then of course, doing the homework at home . Notebooks have cursive line and the pupils know the f has to reach a certain line up or the g a certain line down, and that the letters have to fit in the line. A teacher will make a pupil redo a work if the handwriting is not neat.

@Nighttimenope as in I’m not sure how to take this project further.

Hi OP, we've moved this over to our small businesses forum where you might get more feedback.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 22/05/2020 10:20

It’s an interesting idea - have you spoken to some teachers about it, to make sure it’s in line with the curriculum they’re likely to be teaching? I guess at the moment, maybe that’s not important, but going forward it would make sense to be aware of that.

You’d also then be more likely to get it stocked by school suppliers as you can claim that it’s linked to curriculum topics.

I’d look for educational resource companies and speak to them about what they would need.

I also think you need to get some professional illustrations as the pic on that photo is ugly and old fashioned looking. It’s like a Poundland Mister Men drawing. Sorry if you did it yourself, but if your whole thing is about being creative then you need to walk the walk yourself.

TomSB1423 · 22/05/2020 10:50

@MarkRuffaloCrumble Ok thanks, will do. :)
