Which sling is best for a newborn?

I had a crappy baby bjorn for DD and discovered the joys of slings for DS. I have somewhere (but I cannot find it) a kari me. I only bought it when DS was about 6 months though as the baby bjorn was killing my back.

I was wondering if the kari me is good for new borns and which sling would be the best/most comfy/easiest to pop baby in and out. I have to admit I am lusting after a new sling. I was thinking ergo but I have read comments which seemed to imply it is not that great for a newborn and from 6 months I really like the Kari me.

Any ideas/suggestions/recommendations?

Karime/Moby are fantastic for newborns. DD1 lived in ours for the first 6 months and DD2 spends most of her time in it now.

My Moby wrap has worked brilliantly since DS was 3 days old and is still going strong (6 months old and weighing 19lb)

I had a Close sling for DD3, and she lived in it from newborn to nearly a year - I so wish I'd had it for the other two (had a baby bjorn which killed my back).

Declaration of interest: I need to sell my Close sling, so am likely to big it up

I've got a Close sling too but only got it when DS was 9 weeks so I don't know about tiny babies. Now at 5.5 months I find it's not so good, as he slips downwards when in it for any length of time (he's on the 98th centile for weight and is 21 lbs now.) He does like it, though; but you have to keep tightening the fabric or else he heads towards your knees.

Having said that, I probably would buy it again for a small baby. I got a second hand one cheap from Ebay, so I feel I can justify a new sling soon.

Unlike Poledra, I'm hanging onto my Close for any future DC, so consider me unbiased!

If you google 'sling library', 'sling meet' or 'sling hire', you may be able to find somewhere near you where you can borrow one, or do a trial by post. [http://www.petitpoppet.co.uk/#/carriers-to-hire/4535185788 This company]] hires slings and have agents who can come and help you out, if there's one near you.

Very interesting thank you for the suggestions. Although the moby looks like the spitting image of the kari me!

angel i'll have a look at the petitpoppet webiste, sounds like a great concept.

Any tried any pouch slings. Are they useful/worth it or just a waste of money?

Pouch slings were recalled due to the risk of suffocation. See this and this

I asked the same thing not that long ago, we have had our Moby for a week now and it is brilliant, DS sleeps the minute he goes in it. At first I thought what a hassle it seemed to be a bit sheet and difficult to get the hang of but TBH it was really easy. Cannot recommend it enough now.

I had a Close last time as well and I think the Moby is better, the Close was 2 piece whilst the Moby is one big wrap and with me I seemed to have loads of material left over with the Close.

AngelDog · 16/06/2010 11:57

I think it's bag slings, not pouches which were the dangerous ones.

It's easy to get them confused!

lifeistooshort · 16/06/2010 11:57

Gosh Wittywan thank you for letting me know! I had no idea.

It seems like the consensus is a wrap so I'd better find that kari me (but if I don't it might give me an excuse to buy a funky coloured moby!)

Thank you to all for your useful replies
