That's it really. Nothing too "big frame backpack-y", but with enough support to carry a toddler without a bad back. Do any of you lovely ladies have recommendations?

would you like to learn to wrap? or want a carrier with ties or buckles?

jemart · 12/06/2010 08:24

I've tried this - very hard work with wriggly toddler who wants to get down and run around.
If you are fortunate to have a co-operating non-wriggly child then a stretchy wrap type sling is good for saving your back.
A pouch sling in a hip carry position is quick and easy but not as good if you want to carry them for extended periods of time.

i wouldnt recomment a stretchy wrap for a toddler. a woven wrap would be better and give better support.

I've carried my toddler very comfortably in my close carrier, but if you want a back carrier then I like the look of the mei-tai slings and am trying to make a friend who I can borrow one from!

belgo · 12/06/2010 08:45

Agree, ceratinly not a stretchy sling.

Either a woven sling or a structured soft sling such as the ergo, which I've found excellent.

Or the Mei Tai is very good I've heard.

I could rise to the challenge of wrapping!

We have a Close, but I find DD ends up round my knees if I'm not carefuly, so a bit nervous of stretchy!

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Sorry for the delay in responding - breakfast intervened!

Oh, and she likes the sling. Not walking yet though, so that might change Jemart!

see if you can get to a sling meet or sling library.

or if you are in herts, i can give you a quick demo at some point.

i have wraps, ring slings and a baby patapum. will soon have a wrap conversion as well which is like a mei tai but made from a wrap.

Second the advice to go to a sling meet, I was at our local one today, a year since I started going.

DD is now nearly 14 months, I generally use a buckle carrier - the Babyhawk Snap here - with her on my back. Today was shown a good back carry with a woven wrap which I shall be trying around the house, it's v helpful having someone show you what you can do.

my sis uses an ergo carrier for her large 15 month old boy without probs.

I use a connecta for my 12mth old. We tend to use front carrier but that is more because she likes being close although it is just as comfy on the back and she is happy to be in it.

Thanks everyone. I tried to reply yesterday, but it has vanished?

I would love to go to a sling meet, but all the ones by me seem to be on days I work . Will keep a look out - South east London.

I use an ergo too, and have done since DS' birth. He's 19m now and above average weight. It's great. Not cheap but worth it and they re-sell very well on ebay.
