Question about Connecta Solarweave

I'm thinking of gettingone as I'd like a sling which does back carries and which gives sun protection. I've tried one out before and am hoping to do so again.

Does the hood give reasonable support for a baby who is asleep when in a back carry? DS is currently 5 months, and for me, naps on the go is a big reason for needing a sling.

When I say 'reasonable support', I mean for their head, of course!

should eb fine.

i've used a normal connecta without hood, and as long as baby is bounced down low enough, there is enough support. i tend to find dd4 snuggles her head in anyway

What sling have you currently got, AD? I've been thinking about the Connecta too. I've got two wraps, which are great, but I'm not sure I've got the confidence to get DD on my back without help and I'm usually on my own when I sling her. Also, wraps are very warm and it's getting pretty hot in Spain now....

InmaculadaConcepcion · 29/05/2010 12:13

Just read your other posts and I see it's a Close Baby Carrier, AD... feel free to ignore the above question! Would be interested to know how you get on with the Connecta - my DH is looking sternly at me everytime I mention I want another sling, so I need a lot of ammo to convince him it's a worthwhile purchase!

AngelDog · 29/05/2010 15:13

Yes, IC, I know the feeling! I'd get DH to wear her on the hottest day you can get, and when he complains about being all sweaty, explain how much cooler a specially designed fabric can be... I never thought DH would even consider another one, but he has been fairly keen since DS slides southwards when carried, and we do use it a lot for naps out & about. The Solarweave, of course, is a much more manly looking carrier than a wrap.

I don't know how easy it is to get baby on your back with the Connecta. I tried the Solarweave when DS was 9 weeks old and found it pretty comfy, but I didn't think it gave him enough head support then. Now would be a different matter, of course.

The fabric is SPF factor 50, which appeals for this time of year, and IIRC you can take it in water - not for swimming, obviously, but you could go to a splash park with it if baby was in a swim nappy.

I'll keep you posted; it'll probably be a week or two before I can get hold of one to try out.

And thanks for sharing your experience, misdee.

Thanks AD, that's all worth knowing...

IC, I got the loaned Solarweave today, so I'll report back in due course. First trip out seemed to be a success.

I have a normal connecta and solarweave connecta.
In normal DD3 who is 12mths sits quite low and is well supported. Similair in the solarweave except that with the type of material she is able to get her arms out and over the top of that makes sense.not a problem at all but would mean you would need help to get arms back in before attaching sleep hood. As a front carrier obviously a lot easier and I find it more comfortable.

AngelDog · 16/06/2010 10:17

Thanks, CurtainTwitcher (love the name!) I've not tried a back carry yet but that's useful to know as I would like to be able do back carries.

I had a problem yesterday where the dye seemed to come off on DS's clothes where he'd been slobbering on it. Have you had any problems like this? I've e-mailed the company and asked the person I borrowed it from (who's not heard of this happening before).

Right, IC, I said I'd report back on the Connecta. It's fab and I've bought one.

It's very comfy. It feels quite different from my Close carrier as the weight seems to be carried around the waist and on the back below the neck rather than on the shoulders. I carried DS for the best part of 3 hours and didn't have any backache afterwards, which is unusual (he is 21lbs).

The thin coolness of the fabric is wonderful after the stretchy jersey fabric of the Close carrier. The sun hood is good and seemed to support DS's head okay when he was sleeping.

It would be good for use in the rain as it's not very absorbent fabric, so I'd put DS in waterproofs or tuck him inside my cagoule.

I've done the 'beginners back carry' to test it out and I've twice managed to get DS onto my back successfully without help. You just need to be able to pick him up / put him down from a bed / chair. It feels a bit as if the shoulder straps are going to slip off when he's on the back, but I don't think there's any real danger of that, and you can use the accessory strap to go across the top of your chest so it's impossible for them to fall off.

There is an 'advanced back carry' from 9 months where you put baby on your hip and bounce them round to your back, so no need for a bed / chair to start from, but it looks a bit scary!

I've seen someone breastfeed (a toddler) in it, and I think it would be relatively straightforward for a baby who's happy to feed in an upright position. You need to loosen the straps & slide one side off the shoulder a bit.

Men can cross the straps over their chest, which DH said was more comfortable.

The problem with dye rubbing off seems to have been a one-off and following laundry advice from Connecta it sorted itself out.

And it is very small & light to carry.

Go on, get one!

Ooh, nice review - thanks AD!

Very tempted. DD's been managing fine in the Calin Bleu, although we both get a bit sweaty. But in terms of ease of back-carrying as well as the UV protection etc.....mmm...

AngelDog · 29/06/2010 14:30

You can hire them from Petit Pottet, where I bought mine (here). The site didn't say anything about international postage, but you could always ask.

Oops, I meant Petit Poppet!
