Sling + Summer = Sweaty Mother???

I love carrying ds in the Moby wrap, but it's just getting too hot where I live to do so. Today it's 21 degrees and sunny/cloudy. I went out for an hour long walk with DS in the hug hold and we both ended up with sweaty tummies. Not nice. And it's only going to get worse, with temperatures set to rise to mid thirties in high summer.

DS is 5 mo now and I was already considering moving on to an Ergo or something else anyway.

Which sling or carrier do you recommend for carrying in the heat?

sorry, it was a bit of a gross subject line, but does nobody have any recommendations?

LOL at the title Cies!!

Bumping for you as I would be interested to know too. I'm due in May and thought I'd decided on a Moby wrap with the uv protection but after reading about using a soft wrap in hot weather (I'm being optimistic for the UK summer!) I'm now wondering whether a gauze wrap would be better (looking at the calin bleu) but have read that the calin bleu isn't as stretchy (and poss not as comfy for a newborn)?

Any recommendations please?

IME it is no sweatier than pushing a pram uphill in the summer heat!

CMOTdibbler · 21/04/2010 12:29

How about a solarveil sling ? You can get ring slings in it, or meitais/sscs with solarveil panels - very cool and uv protecting

Thanks, I'll have a google. I've read some good things about the Connecta Solarweave, although it's not in a pretty fabric like the other Connectas.

I have an Ergo and it's great and not particularly sweaty!

PrimroseCrabapple · 22/04/2010 12:50

i found my ergo sweaty due the padding round the waist. I had a nice cottony mei tai in cream and beige stripes.

must stick it on the for sale boards actually.

Wraps I found way hot in the summer tbh

Calin bleu(sp?) wraps in the gauze material is very comfy in the summer heat and lovely with a small baby. Also many people find ellaroo wraps nice and light. There are some thinner weaves Didymos wraps available that are a little expensive such as thin linen indios , and airy weaves such as 'waves.'
I agree that a baby will be hot in a buggy, as well as in a sling. The advantage with a sling, is that you can instantly feel if lo is too hot and remove layers etc.

I've got a Calin Bleu gauze and just took DD out in it here in Spain... she was too hot, even though I used a wrap which minimised the layers on her body and she was only wearing a vest AND her legs were out AND I was shading us both with an umbrella.
Back to the drawing board for that one IMO...

foxytocin · 28/04/2010 04:35

Ergo will leave you with a sweaty waist as it has a wide foam padding.

for hot weather i used a pouch sling in Spain w my 10 mo old last year.

if you have basic sewing skills you can make one as instructions are online.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 25/05/2010 16:54

In fairness to the Calin Bleu gauze, I feel I should mention here that I've since put DD in it several times in the hot weather and she's been absolutely fine. OK, we're not into SUPER hot weather yet, but that previous occasion when she kicked off was, I think, more to do with tiredness and other factors than being hot in the sling (it's possible that contributed a little, I suppose). Anyway, she seems pretty happy in it now and has dropped off to sleep in it too, which is always a vote of baby confidence!

Definitely something woven rather than cotton stretchy fabric IMO - I have the Close baby carrier which has been great, but we get very warm using it in the summer!

misdee · 29/05/2010 08:16

i have a didymos cotton fische wrap and its soooo cool and soft for the summer. get a touch of sweaty back, but nothing like i get when pushing the pram.

Following on from this thread I've bought a Connecta Solarweave. I like it so far, although carrying ds on my front is becoming too much for anything except the shortest trip.

We've had a couple of scorching days here (35 deg) and I've coped, but ds and I still get sweaty tummies. I suppose it's just the way it is with slings.

Do let us know how you get on with it over time - I'm thinking of one for my 5 m.o., and I don't think I'm the only one!

dorisbonkers · 02/06/2010 13:05

I lived in Singpore and used a Calin Bleu every day and when she was older I found a back wrap was useful when I was super hot.

Never bought a pram so can't have been that hot and I used to spend a lot of time walking about in a bored daze!
