I like the look of both of these.

Don't fancy ones I need to tie or wrap.

Dh prefers the price of the connecta but it looks less sturdy than the ergo to me.
What do I know though!
Opinions please......any for sale too?? !!

No answer for you, but interested in this, as I've got my beady eye on an Ergo but don't know much about the Connecta. We had a BB Active last time and 'twas no use to us.

princessmel · 03/04/2010 20:14

Yes I am keen on an Ergo too due to the things I've read about them on here

Ds2 has liked the BB but he is almost too long for it now, his arms have to stay down through the holes, plus it's uncomfy for me.

I have a Lifft pouch but can't manage the 'looking out front ways' position and this hurts after a while too. It slips also.

Where are all the sling experts?!

foxytocin · 04/04/2010 10:50

connecta. connecta. connecta.

lowrib · 04/04/2010 11:42

We had the Ergo, and it was great!

BertieBotts · 04/04/2010 11:48

Neither. Patapum! You could probably get away with the toddler version on your front (or even on your back if you're brave or have a helper) if your baby can sit unaided. Then switch to the back when they get heavier (around a year?)

Baby looking out frontways isn't a very supportive position for the parent so with any sling this won't be comfy much past 8 months or so. If you want them to be able to see out then I'd do a back carry.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 04/04/2010 14:14

Not wanting to hijack as it's Mel's thread, but the specific issues for us (family tendency towards big, heavy babies; and also my absurdly large boobs getting in way of sling ) have led people to recommend Ergo in the past.

princessmel · 04/04/2010 21:45

No worries Dorothea Any advice welcome .

Not heard of the Patapum.

I suppose a sling that is perfect for one person is not always perfect for someone else.

I just want it to be easy to get him in and out of and comfy. Not too 'backpacking/hiking-ey' either!!

I love my Connecta and it is much admired . I have used it every day for the last year - DD is now 18 months .

I tried out am Ergo first but I found that it pushed my trousers down which was kinda annoying ( I think because it sits on your hips whereas the Connecta is worn on the waist).

I also like that the Connecta is less bulky than the Ergo .

Any chance you can get a borrow of one or both and see how you get on ?

BertieBotts · 05/04/2010 01:30

I find the Patapum comfortable, because the toddler version (which I have) is specifically designed for carrying children over 12-18 months ish, which means that it has an extra strap to stop them arching their back and bring their body closer to yours (centre of gravity closer to your body = more comfy and less strain on your back) it's also got a long body, and is extremely well padded.

Looks wise it looks similar to the Ergo, not sure what the Connecta looks like but I assume similar again.

It does tend to push your trousers down (though I find if I pull them up so the waistband is higher than the hip belt of the carrier then it's ok) but it needs to sit on your hips in order to transfer the weight to them effectively, which is much better than having the weight on your back. Although I don't know how the Connecta works - it may also transfer the weight to your hips somehow. I haven't tried it so don't know.

I would be careful of the Lifft pouch, BTW - I might be wrong but isn't it one of the type that was recalled recently?

princessmel · 05/04/2010 10:21

No not the same atall BB. It is not a bag sling

I carried my toddler in my connecta until he got too tall for me to be happy with him in it, at about 2 (he's a reasonably large lad). I've been very very pleased with it.

Go for one with a sleep hood to make it last longer too.

I didn't get on with the baby patapum at all, and haven't tried an ergo.

princessmel · 05/04/2010 11:14

BB

Oooh I can't decide!!! ( I need to sell a few bits on ebay first to even be able to buy one btw..!)

I saw on the connecta website that the newest ones have a sort of hood, is that the same as the ergo sleep hood do you think?

I have a connecta and we all (I, DP and DS) love it!

ChairmumMiaowGoingItAlone · 05/04/2010 11:16

princessmel - dunno what the ergo sleep hood is like, but you can get the connecta-integra with the built in / tuck away hood, or a custom one with a hood that is sewn to the sling.

princessmel · 05/04/2010 11:40

Thanks Chairmum

The connecta looks less sturdy ifyswim. But I'm not keen on the thought of the ergo pushing my trousers down!!

I like the designs on the connecta.

I like the comfyness of the ergo.

Price is better on the Connecta.

Dh could wear the ergo...

Even stevens.

foxytocin · 05/04/2010 14:36

the connecta is heavy duty despite its looks. the designer and maker is a babywearer with many years of carrying experience and I am sure she makes a very sturdy carrier.

monkeycat · 05/04/2010 19:59

The Connecta is reversible - pattern on one side /black on the other , so if your DH doesn't like the pattern you choose he can wear it with just the black showing . It is also very adjustable so easy to swap between yourself and your DH size-wise .

I found the lady that makes the Connecta really helpful . She added a sleep hood to the design I wanted and it was with me in 3 or 4 days . I am a big fan .

DorotheaPlenticlew · 06/04/2010 08:31

My trousers always fall down anyway so I guess I shouldn't set too much store by that.

In fact, someone should make a sling with little hooks designed to hold your trousers up.

Didifrench · 07/04/2010 21:05

I have a connecta and I just love it!!! I recently bought the lombar support belt as my daughter is 11months old and around 10kg. It is a good compromise between the mei tai and the ergo.
I did try an ergo 3 months ago, and found it brilliant. My daughter was really light compared to the wrap. But when I had a look on the price, i just couldn t afford it. After looking on all reviews, I gave a go to the connecta, as I just loved the colours. The ergo was just too basic and backpack looking for me. I think I am just used to have a colourfull carrier.
The support panel is higher with the connecta than the ergo.
My daughter was putting her arms above the panel in the ergo, she doesn t in the connecta.
A carrier can be good for one personn but not for another. Some people love the manduca some other the ergo but they are quite similar.
Maybe try to find a sling meet near you to try by yourself and see which one suit you best?

sasamaxx · 08/04/2010 11:16

Connecta doesn't pull trousers down
Not sure if I missed what age your LO is - connecta is suitable from very young - whereas the ergo is only really good when they get a good bit older.

Connecta much less bulky than ergo but when baby gets heavier, ergo is far more supportive. That said, lots of people use connectas for age 2+ and get along just fine with them.

Can't you get both????
