Ergo or Bjorn Comfort?? Confused, need help!

Hi
I'm very confused whether to go for Ergo or Bjorn Comfort. I've tried Bjorn classic and it seem uncomfortable and not right position for baby -baby's dangling leg didn't seem right & all pressure on his crotch area! Read reviews about Ergo & it seems good. My only hang up is that the baby cannot face forward?!? Bjorn Comfort seems to have additional bit at front which seems to position baby's legs in squat position. Has anyone tried both? Would like some advice on this as confused so much!!! Thanks in advance

Although it's widely done, forward facing carrying isn't really recommended for a few reasons. I don't have any experience or knowledge of the Bjorn Comfort, but a quick google for pics shows that in FF carry, baby's knees are lower than their hips, which is not optimal positioning. It puts a lot of pressure on the groin and hips. It's best that bum is a little lower than knees.

FF also stops the spine being nice and roundly curved (again optimal positioning for growth & comfort), and puts pressure on the wearers' neck and back by throwing the weight too far forward and down.

Some babies do seem to love facing out, but a good high back carry, or even front carry in something like an Ergo should mean they get to see all they want. They can also then turn into you if they get tired or overstimulated, which is easily done in FF position.

Don't mean to seem a naysayer but carriers are expensive if you don't get good use out of them because either you or LO are uncomfortable!

I have the Ergo and it's great for older babies and v comfy for me. But I could never get the hang of using the baby insert when DD was newborn (used Baby Björn).
Ni front face didn't bother me and bring able to put her in back too is fab.

Thanks so much for your replies. I was just worried if DS would get bored after a while facing in. But the points made above help & clarify. Can the Ergo be used fom 2plus months as my DS just turned 2 months!
Also, I'm not aware of many other SSC, so please could I get help in deciding if Ergo is best or other SSC are better? And some engine sellers as well please :)
Thanks.

What the others said. Definitely the Ergo or similar where the baby's not dangling from his crotch and the weight is better distributed.

Front facing is fun for the baby but not good for their or the wearer's posture, back carry is better for facing forwards. You will get far longer service from an ergo ime

Kisna have a google for sling meets or sling libraries in your area - you will be able to get specific recommendations / advice and try different carriers out. Not been to a sling meet myself, but our sling library loans slings for two week periods at £5, so you can test several out before you fork out a lot of money!

FWIW the lady who runs our sling library said yesterday that the window of time when an outward facing front carry is even possible is fairly small. There was also a lady trying an SSC with her pretty chunky 15 month old, and she was amazed that she couldn't feel the weight of him at all! That shows how a good carrier (and importantly, the right carrier for you) can really work.

Sorry, in my above message I meant genuine not 'engine'! :)

I bought a sling from maverickbaby.co.uk I think they have lots of good stuff and advice on there

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/08/2012 18:51

Ergo can be used from birth with their infant insert...

Kisna108 · 01/08/2012 18:56

@teaandhobnobs-Thanks for your reply. It's fab if I can try before I buy! Will check the sling library in my area. Thanks :)

Ergo, Ergo, Ergo!

Although you'll need the infant insert for a tiddler.

Honestly, it's the best baby product I ever bought. I use it every day (and I work ft!).

(beware the fakes, buy from Amazon/approved retailer)

PrincessWatermelon · 01/08/2012 19:16

V interesting.

In terms of buying genuine - do you think buying from Amazon would guarentee it was ok? There are a number of sellers - listed and want to get the real deal!

Thanks.

Ergo. I had both and ditched the baby bjorn after 5 months (only bought because everyone seemed to have it). I wished I had just gone for the Ergo.

PrincessWatermelon · 01/08/2012 19:29

How do you confirm the seller is genuine on Amazon?

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 01/08/2012 19:34

The natural mamas forum has pre-loved slings for sale for a lower (in some cases) cost. Worth a look. Hth

BeatriceBean · 01/08/2012 19:58

Ergo definitely. I love ours x

Scarredbutnotbroken · 01/08/2012 20:01

Forward facing is not recommended because its over stimulating for a small baby - they need to option of having an eye break as often as they want it - plus the spinal
Position isn't much good for them either hope that made sense

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 01/08/2012 20:54

Watermelon, that's a good question.

I know mine is genuine, and I know that I saw on the ergo website that Amazon are an approved seller. But I don't recall which seller mine actually came from.

Kisna108 · 02/08/2012 08:54

Thanks all for the input. Now just to add bit more to the thread! - any views on Beco carrier? Better than Ergo or worse? Just want to be sure I get the right one which is suitable for both myself & DS :) thanks

Ergo! We've just had to retire our bjorn style carrier at 10 weeks. DS is always looking out to the side then deciding to snuggle in for a nap. Its comfier for me too.

MissLove · 29/08/2012 10:47

I have used Bjorn for my little one. Very confy. I passed in to my friend.

needsadviceplease · 29/08/2012 19:02

I think Beco might be a tiny bit narrower/shorter than Ergo? Its def narrower and shorter than Manduca. A lot of people dislike the Ergo newborn insert, which is an additional item to buy and you may still need it at 2mo... I would really rexommend trying if you can. I tried Ergo and Manduca and though Ergo was great I def prefer the Manduca.

KatAndKit · 04/09/2012 11:16

Bondolino! it is so comfortable! It is a similar carrier to the Manduca except it does not use buckles so there is nothing that needs readjusting if you change user. No complicated wrapping, you just tie one double knot in the straps. Suitable for front and back carry (but not forward facing front carry as that is not recommended). Big padded shoulder straps to distribute the weight comfortably for you. My baby naps happily in it. I haven't tried breastfeeding in it but I don't think it would be all that easy for me, I tend to need to be sitting down.

Instead of forward facing front carry, a baby who has good head control can go on a hip carry in a ring sling. This is not so comfy for walking around all day as it is a one shoulder sling, but is good for short amounts of time for a baby who isn't ready for a sleep and wants to have a look around.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 06/09/2012 23:53

I love the bondolino too, Kat! Smile I don't see many of them around, but it's so comfy compared with a less padded mei tai.
