Max size for Ergo carrier

DS is very big (and has outgrown his Baby bjorn style carrier at 2 months). We are looking at buying an Ergo carrier, but its a lot of money to pay out if he is going to be out of that shortly. How big have your children been before they were no longer comfortable in an Ergo?

Also, are they comfortable for tall parents? TIA

I am 5'8", I was confortable till DD2 was 14.5 Kg and 95 cm + then she was too active and made me loose balance. With a calm kid you might be able to go till the weight limit.
They were very comfortable though!

(DD2 was above the curves though and still is at 2.5 yo, I stop using the ergo last october at 1.9 yo)

We stopped just about 2 years old as she wanted to walk everywhere. Using it with no 2 now and love it :-)

It lasts for ages, definitely. Is there anywhere you can go locally to try one out? It seems to vary with tall people, some find it very comfortable, others just aren't built for it, but there are a lot of other slings to try if that doesn't suit you.

Might be worth googling to see if you have any sling meets or sling libraries nearby or any physical stockists.

I've recently finished using mine with dc3, not because he's outgrown it but because he wants to walk everywhere. Like you I had the babybjorn for the other two which wasn't that great, but I invested in one for dc3 as for a reflux baby it was a godsend. I reckon if you had a dc who liked being in the Ergo then certainly they would fit to 3 yrs old although I think the DVD that comes with it said 4yrs?

I know people who have used them for occasional carries for 4 year olds, but I have a toddler patapum which is like the Ergo with a longer back and I didn't feel it was safe for DS at about 2.5 as it only came up to his hips by then. At 2 this is an issue; at 3+ if they're unlikely to fall asleep, perhaps less so.

Thanks. Looks like its worth trekking across the city to the only shop which sells them. We're quite stuck because of him being pretty big but unable to sit up for a rucksack carrier when we're living in the countryside.

If you're anywhere near me, you're welcome to try mine. At some point 'll stick it on Ebay, they appear hold their value really well.

We had a walking rucksack carrier as well (we love hiking) but we both found the ergo preferable to it and sold the walking rucksack one in the end!

If you can find a sling library or sling meet there is likely to be more choice to try out, but a shop is a good bet if you can't find either of these.

I know our local shop which stocks Ergos has a selection of slings, but most of them are pretty rubbish slings, in all honesty. Not a true selection even though they stock about seven different types.

We had our 3 y 8 m old in our Ergo for a back carry - think that was probably the last time she will be in it but was perfectly comfortable. She is 91st centile so not a small child really. Ergo now in use every day for her little sister at 10m.

MrsHoarder · 23/07/2012 15:57

Thank you everyone. I couldn;t go to the local sling meet because the next ine is mid-September which is a long time to not have a baby carrier for.

Went to the shop today, tried out the Ergo and Manduca, decided to go with the basic Ergo.

I have been using my ergot for 5 years now. Youngest is 2.5 and 15 kg and still in it mainly on my back but occasionally front if he wants a sleep and a bf (the good is a bf godsend!).
It really is the best baby thing I've ever bought.

BeatriceBean · 23/07/2012 17:38

Hope you get on well with it. Let u!s know! I've had my 7month old on my back all morning. It's often so much easier than a pushchair.

I have 10 month old non Identical Twin girls , who are about 201bs. I have 1 x ergo & now 1 x Boba 2G. Our twins are quite tall 93th percentile, at about 30inches. 19 inches from bum to head. At 10 months, we found that the ergo isnt high enough at the back to stop the babies heads lean outwards. Both babies can sit & hold their heads up & 1 walks while holding. The Boba is the best now with its higher back , & baby foot rests for when the baby gets older. Prior to this the Ergo was the best baby thing I had. Its now ok for under 4 hrs use , which is probably the most common use. But for long days out ie our 10 hr trip to the Olympics last week, the ergo , became uncomfortable for me & baby after 4 hrs. Also Oh Snap & Butterfly looked interesting. Ergo & Boba are both v well made though & both easily hold weight up to 35-45 lbs.
