Bought this from a second hand baby sale but having looked it up it appears these slings aren't that safe, so now I'm worried. Do I have good reason to be or can anyone on here reassure me?

An almost identical sling was recalled because babies died in them. I wouldn't put my baby in one in a million years.

Are you near a sling library or sling meet? If you want a sling for your new baby it is probably worth trying some out in person - you will likely end up spending more than you did on the 2nd hand Premaxx one but at least you'll be spending on something that works, iyswim.

Yup, bag type slings may be dangerous.

I second the suggestion to find a sling meet in you area.

Also the Natural Mamas forum is a really good source of sling information and they have a, really really really good 2nd hand board.

I did try & have a look for a sling meet but couldn't find one near me. We borrowed a baby bjorn with number 1 so might go that way, not going to risk baby for the sake of a £10 sling!

While they're certainly not as out-and-out dangerous as a bag sling, BB-type carriers aren't ideal either I'm afraid as they put baby's spine and pelvis under a lot of pressure as their weight bears down on a small surface area around their crotch! They're also not terribly well designed for the carrier either, with lots of parents reporting back pain.

I would recommend (and of course it's entirely up to you) trying a stretchy wrap like a Moby, or a Caboo carrier for a new baby. They're supple but supportive, keeping the baby's spine rounded and their legs supported from knee pit to knee pit, which is optimal positioning.

Have a google also for soft structured carriers and mei-tais - there are a lot available and theyre not only better overall for babies, but more original in design than a generic high-street carrier, you can get them custom made etc so would be comfortable and unique!

You can hire online from Slumberoo, not as good as a sling library where you get shown how to use the sling you hire but better than nothing.
