Why are BabyBjorns so popular? And why do people carry their babies outward facing?

I don't really get why Baby Bjorn is such a popular make of sling? Everyone I have met who has tried one says they're uncomfortable (actually two people say they are comfy, but the rest say it makes their shoulders hurt). As an experienced babywearer I have tried lots of slings and carriers (the Manduca being my favourite to wear on the back, on the front I prefer woven wraps). So I can't really critisise people when I don't know how it actually feels - but from what I've read, and what I can see, there are many much better (ergonomically) slings for baby and parent out there. It just looks uncomfortable for the baby to be hanging by the crotch, and I feel like saying something to every Baby Bjorn user I see, but obviously that would be rude.

Why are they so popular, and why don't people do a bit more research before they buy their sling?

I got on ok with mine. When dd was smaller, she faced inward and generally slept. When she was older, she faced outward and looked around. She was soon too heavy for me though

I bought a BB with DC1 because I didn't know that any others existed except for the close wrap sling, had the lady in the shop been able to show me how to get DD into it I may have quite liked it! I used to give myself 2 hours tops with the BB by then it was too much.

Now I have an Ergo and a wrap, so much better. I've passed on the sling guide card when people have been really interested (I don't actually carry them around all of the time...).

I know this is a few days old now, but a friend has just sent me this for those who are interested in the hip problem thing.

I bought my BB when dd was 3 months. I didn't know about slings and wraps. BB are even sold in the supermarkets here. It was easy to use so an easy sale for me.

DD loved facin out and would 'chat' to everyone in the shops.

Only later, did I find out about the world of carriers. I made some slings and a mei tai and prefer them now as they are more comfortable to wear.

I'll probably still use the BB sometimes with DD2 but not until she's a bit sturdier.
