Best 'pouch' sling for a newborn

Hello,

I am 36 weeks with dc1. After much deliberation finally bought a Moby Wrap from ebay.

However, would also like a pouch style sling which is quick and easy to put on, for nipping to the corner shop for example. Ideally one which can be adjusted so that dp can use it too, though I appreciate this might not be possible.

Any suggestions?

You can buy adjustable pouch slings like the hotslings adjustable pouch. You'd need a sized one to share a pouch, as they need to fit just right.

Personally I prefer ring slings - more adjustable, still just as quick to put on, but quicker to adjust if someone else has been wearing it beforehand (you fit it every time you put it on, whereas with an adjustable pouch you'd leave it set to the right size for you iyswim). I like the ones made from woven wraps best (Didymos, Lenny Lamb, Storchenwiege, Hoppediz, Natibaby, Girasol, etc are ones to look out for). Avoid things with a padded top rail - you don't really need the padding and it just seems to get in the way. I put babies upright tummy-to-tummy in them from birth - it is easier than a cradle position for me, and safer. There is a bit of a knack to them (and to pouches) - it might be worth a quick trip to your local sling library or sling meet if you have one so someone can show you how to get it right.

Thank you, very helpful!
I was a bit daunted by the ring slings and know that dp wants something super quick and easy to use. But have just discovered there is a local sling meet so if I can get the hang of it I'm sure he can be persuaded.

Probably a stupid question but is it worth going along to sling meets when pregnant, or better to wait until baby is here?

Thanks again!

Either to be honest. Or even both - go along when you are pregnant to work out what to buy, then go along again with the baby if you could use a bit of extra help.

I run a sling library and have had pregnant people / people with slings not working for them / people with baby but no sling all turn up.

Not to be a scare-monger but just so's you're informed, there have been safety concerns about pouch slings.

pootlebug thank you, I will go along to the meet, will be days away from due date but good to speak to an expert! My moby arrived today so have been practising. Quite hard to work around the bump!

Thanks, MrsPlug I had seen that...But thought that some, such as hotslings etc had been deemed safe? And only the deeper bag style were not considered safe.

Would you recommend a ring sling over a pouch sling? Sorry for all the questions.

Hotslings are safe. Natural Mamas has a page on sling safety here.

The slings linked by MrsPlugThePlumber above are Bag Slings, not pouches. A pouch like a Hotsling is completely different.
