I have tried putting a blanket in the bottom but baby is still a bit crooked...
she is only 7 pounds...

how can I make it more supportive/comfortable for my newborn

I would never put a newborn in any kind of sling.

TheRealMBJ · 06/12/2011 19:59

Really Quint? My DD (and DD) have been in my Moby wrap since day 3. Feel much more comfortable with her there than in a pram (especially now that it is turning cold.)

It is perfectly safe to use a sling with a newborn as long as their spine is in a straight line and they at close enough to you to kiss them.

QuintessentiallyFestive · 06/12/2011 20:00

I just wouldnt. Not too confident about the spine.

TheRealMBJ · 06/12/2011 20:01

That's meant to read DD and DS

TheRealMBJ · 06/12/2011 20:04

How do you mean? I always think DD looks more uncomfortable (and less straight) in the infant carrier/car seat thingy

Assuming you mean a Connecta - if you don't have a strap to pinch it in you can always use a ribbon tied around to narrow it. Or put your baby in with their legs froggy position inside the sling. And as Loopymumsy says, you can shorten it by rolling the waist over.

QuintessentiallyFestive - when babies are born their spine is curved. It gradually develops over the first year to the same sort of shape as adults have (with the final changes coming as the baby cruises/walks). So the positioning you get in a good sling is far more natural and normal for a newborn spine than lying them flat. That doesn't apply to all slings - some put a lot of pressure on the base of the spine which obviously isn't ideal. But a stretchy or woven wrap, or well-designed soft carrier, will cradle their spine in a much more optimum position

mamaesi · 13/12/2011 14:46

ok so i tried narrowing the bottom with a tie...she still tried to froggy her legs and they didn't hang out the bottom so well.... and then her head, slopes to the side and her neck seems bent...

How do I know if its safe this way...how do you know where the pressure is being distributed?

Are you anywhere near a sling meet or sling library (have a look at www.slingmeet.co.uk for details) as it is often much easier for someone to help in person if possible.

If not, could you post a photo on your profile? So that we can see how you might change the positioning to make it work better

chocolateyclur · 13/12/2011 18:41

Watching with interest - I have a connecta and a very overdue baby, and I've no idea how to get the baby in! (once it's finally born, of course)

mamaesi · 16/12/2011 13:26

tried folding over bottom and filling it up with a blanket...seems ok but still not sure

I fold the bottom up on my cOnnecta for DS who's 13 days old and he fits in that way.
