Kari Me too small to wear according to instructions, safe to tie at back? or any recommendations for a sling for fatty?

Trying out the basic knot and it won't wrap round far enough. Blush
It says on the website to ring them for assistance, but I think I'll burst into tears.

Any ideas?

You could try making your own insructions here, it's not complicated and you can customise to your size.

I had a Karrimee, the first few times I tried to tie it I thought I was too fat for it - turns out I has massively underestimated how tight you need to tie it, especially for a newborn. I ended up with the Karrimee in three colours and used them every day for at least the first 7 months.

I'm a size 18 with a pot belly!

InvaderZim · 13/11/2011 23:24

I had a moby wrap and tied it at the back or (more usually, because then I could sit down comfortably) at the side. Assuming the Kari-Me uses the same wraps. :)

TimeWasting · 13/11/2011 23:39

Good website Pelvic, they show the wrap using a Moby and say you tie at the back, or front, so presuming there's no inherent issue with not having it tied at the front. Grin

I'm not a massive fan of the kari-me. I find it too stretchy - but any stretchy wrap can be tied in the same way, look on youtube :) I liked the Newborn Hug Hold when DS was little.

And no it doesn't matter where you tie it as long as it isn't going to fall off!

I'd tie at the side if possible rather than the back (start slightly off centre), because a knot in your back is uncomfortable if you sit down.

I brought a custom ring sling on ebay for --my fatty fatty fat build-- a comfier ride for dd, sent my measurements and colour preference, paid around £15 I think and its still comfy and going strong 3years later :)

shuckleberryfinn · 13/11/2011 23:55

Yup, it should go round you like a second skin. tie it so tight that there's no loose anywhere. I do have a 5 metre piece of stretchy jersey that I bought from ebay and that goes round my large frame several times.

WombOnTheBroom · 14/11/2011 09:59

I use a moby and am enormous a deliciously curvy 18... Have started to shift some of the baby belly so can actually tie it at the front now. I can't breathe, obviously, but it makes me feel good so what's a little oxygen deprivation? Wink

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 14/11/2011 10:04

I used a Kari Me at a size 18. I agree it needs to be much tighter than you maybe expect it to be, the fabric will give. I have a Moby this time and it does seem far less stretchy than the Kari Me, I don't know if that's just because it's straight out of the packet and will loosen with use?

Oh I'm a size 22/24, it definitely won't come round the front.

WombOnTheBroom, well done. Grin

Loopy, yes that's it exactly.

Thank you all, I'm going to try it again, and put the actual baby in it. Grin

Good luck Smile and it's worth persevering even if the first attempt doesn't go too well, it can take a while to get the hang of getting baby in at the right angle!

TimeWasting · 14/11/2011 11:36

Yes, I had a go and she didn't seem happy, but think she might have been a bit tired and grumpy.
Also she's four weeks old now so has started straightening her legs out rather than remaining curled up which made it tricky. Hmm Grin

I shall persevere though, it felt great. Smile

Legs out is fine at 4 weeks - just make sure the fabric is spread out over her bum and comes up to each knee pit (and her knees are higher than her hips) :)

you could use an Ergo Sling with a waist extender. I'm an 18 and needed the waist extender for about an inch extra - there is plenty of extension left. I was given a 2nd hand Ergo and brought the extender for £10 from ebay or amazon.
