sling novice..need sling for a toddler

My only experience of carrying my lo is from a mega uncomfortable babybjorn however a friend has been carrying her newborn in a proper sling and is raving about it. I would love to try something similar for my 21 month old especially as we are going on holiday in a couple of weeks.

Which slings are suitable for toddlers? My lo would mainly be in for naps so I'm worried about his head flopping around, is there a way round this?

Thanks in advance

I had a kari-me for my son and I so wished I had bought one for my daughter - it was great - my son was a big boy so he grew out of it quickly - I think kari-me has a website www.kari-me.co.uk

Age range: newborn (or prem baby) to toddler
Weight range: birth to 33lb (15kg approx)

Or try this link where there were some pictures of toddlers in conmfy wraps

www.littlepossums.co.uk/slings/wrap-slings.htm#karime

Hope that helps

A KariMe will have far too much give in it to carry a toddler. A woven wrap would work, but there is an element of learning what to do. The ideal carrier for you would be an Ergo or a Toddlerhawk I think

I carry dd (16m) in an ergo and will keep going for xa while. It is really comfy for both of us.

Rose and Rebellion are very comfortable.

Other names to try are Connecta, Manduca and Patapum.

Really like my Connecta. DS isn't a toddler, but I have him in the back carry and it's very comfortable.

I'd love to try a Manduca, I've heard good things.

I carried DD in an Ergo back carry up until 2 y 7m. Recommended.

I found an onbuhimo best when dd was a toddler. It's sort of like a mei tai, but has rings at the base of the sling instead of waist straps, and, I think, was specifically designed to carry bigger kids. I'm pretty sure they're not hard to find on the web, but they're also a piece of cake to make if you're handy with a sewing machine.

Oh, and the back carry is definitely the way to go with a toddler, and you can get mei tais (and presumably onbus) with a built in head rest thingy to make sure their heads don't flop. Although if they're sleeping on your back, their head tends to be resting against your shoulder anyway, and as long as the body of the sling's big enough, it should support the head.

Can I throw in a late recommendation for the Beco Butterfly II, I used mine constantly until DD no longer wanted to be carried. I will be getting it out for DC2 later this year.
