What does your small baby wear in a wrap sling?

I'm very new to baby-wearing, only having used a BB with DS1 (and not for long, because it killed my back!).

I'm starting with a Kari Me for DS2 (5 wks). We're in the South Midlands, weather is nippy but not too cold - 5, 6 degrees? I'm always worried about DS2 getting overheated in the sling, as he's under three tight layers of cotton jersey. Basically, I'm putting him into the sling (his legs stay inside, he's not in a straddle position yet) dressed in a standard babygro and a woollen handknit cardigan. Is that ok?? I read that as long as his head's covered by one side of the sling, he shouldn't wear a hat. He goes into the carseat in a pair of over-sized, snuggly knitted trousers (we have a lot of handknits from my mum!) but they seem way too hot to wear in a sling.

I know he should be wearing less than if he were in the Baby Bjorn, but how much less? Confused I'm worried about overheating but might have gone too far in the other direction!

Are you wearing a coat over the top of him?

If you are, he just needs to be in whatever he wears in the house. I'd probably put a little hat on him more to keep his ears warm than anything else! Once he's legs out, you might want to add some socks or something to keep his toes warms.

But he sounds fine!

No coat - an open, knee-length cardy. I don't seem to have an 'active' coat at the moment - was too hot while pregnant! So, if not wearing a coat over the top of the sling, maybe he needs another layer? Vest+babygro+cardy??

Sorry, I feel so silly writing this down - it seems the epitomy of Newbie Mum daftness, but I can't really tell how hot he'll get - when I take him out of the sling in just a babygro and cardy, he seems pretty toasty to me.

I did wonder about a hat - his head was half covered by the sling but I kept his ear covered.

Personally, unless it's really bloody cold, I think a Babygro, Cardi & 3 layers of wrap will be fine.

I worry more about extremities on tiny ones, and you've got those covered.

In terms of babies, them being far too hot is more dangerous than them being far too cold. And he sounds fine.

And don't worry about asking questions, we were all new mums once!

It's not a daft question at all. It is so hard to know these things.

When it's really cold (ie freezing) I put my DD in a proper snowsuit in our sling (connecta integra), especially if we're taking the dog for a walk or something which means she'll be out for a long time.

In slightly warmer conditions just a vest, babygrow, cardi and hat. Its amazing how warm your body heat keeps baby.

I do worry about her feet though as they stick out of the sling.

Can I do a thread hijack and ask what people put of baby's legs/feet to keep them warm?

I've only just got my Moby sling so looking forward to experimenting with it but in my babybjorn carrier I put my son in a snowsuit if it's really cold, otherwise it's tights underneath his dungarees/trousers. I also usually wear quite a fleecy type jacket and zip it up at the bottom so his feet are tucked in.

I've got a winter sling fleece for the really cold days or if I'm out for a while. Otherwise I just add tights and fleece socks. Ive got a Connecta Integra and this seems to work for us.

Dd always wears what she would normally wear in the house (our house isn't very warm!!) but no coat or snowsuit etc, just and outfit with a jumper or cardigan. She is always lovely and warm as she is next to me, keeps me warm to, although she does wear a hat.

Dd is 11wks and her feet are still tucked into the sling.

On the school run I use the car and then the sling, it is always noticeable that dd's hand are freezing in the car but after being in the sling they are lovely and warm so she must be ok.

Revisiting this thread! Thanks for all the advice. Smile Since I started this thread, I've become a lot more confident of dressing DS2 for his wrap sling. Right now, he goes in wearing the babygro/cardy combi, or dungarees/cardi, and then either has the babygro feet, or socks, and thick knitted woollen bootees over that. The only part of him that isn't toasty is his feet. (are his feet) Do babylegs really keep them that warm? They're so clingy I wondered if they'd trap enough air.

paidrag slippers are the best for toasty toesGrin
