Why doesnt it feel right putting my 8week old baby in upright position in carriers?

Hi all, my DD is 8 weeks old, 13.4lbs. I've just bought an Ergo carrier, and as with the mei tai we've been using, it doesn't feel quite right her being in that upright position. Even though i secure it tight, she still slips down a bit in it eventually. Isnt this bad for her spine, and her breathing? Also she loves looking around at everything, and in these slings she cant see anything as she's facing me. It feels like i'm depriving her of seeing things which she so enjoys. Am i being paranoid? Can anyone else relate? Thanks x

I totally agree, small babies do feel too small for this type of carrier and I have never felt happy enough to have worn one for long with a small baby.
Wrap slings are probably best for newborns as there have been lots of issues with babies in pouch and hammock type slings and some have been withdrawn for safety reasons.
Wrap slings are better than the mainstream front carriers as the baby's weight is supported by the wearer instead of it all being placed on the base of the spine with the baby literally hanging.
Once your DD is a bit older I'm sure your slings will be fine but if you're not happy then hold off for a while.

have you seen this page before for mei tais and other carriers? you essentially want their spines to be straight and their chins off their chests.

I think I would still be using the ergo insert with an 8 wk old. I have an insert going spare if you need one. Smile

I used the ergo from a minimum of five months; I used a wrap sling up until then.

Before five months I would consider the baby to be too small for the ergo. Possibly it's fine with the insert but I've never seen it used.

Thanks all and thanks for offer foxytocin :) infant insert arrived today. It's so fiddly! I just dont know if she's too big for it. She's nearly a stone in weight, quite long and can just about support her head. She seems really high up in it. This is becoming quite frustrating, as i've spent so much money on different slings. If a wrap is probably the best thing, then isnt a mei tai just as good, as it works more or less in the same way?
