Kari Me for 6mth old baby?

I would really like to try a Kari Me sling but my DS is 6mths and weighs 18lb. Reviews seem to be good for younger/lighter babies but not so good for heavier babies (I guess due to stretchiness of fabric). According to Kari Me website they should be ok.

Does anyone manage to use one comfortably with a 6mth+ baby??

OMG I cannot recommend these enough. Fabulous at all ages.

A newborn in them is great as they are positioned like in the womb and can sleep well snuggled into you as they're comforted by your heartbeat and smell.

When my DS was around 5 months old I either had him facing me if he was a little sleepy (that way if he drifted off I could put some material around the back of his head to stop him lolling). If he was wide awake or when he was a bit older I had him facing forwards, he loved being close to me and being able to see the world around him.

My DH and I never had any problems with it feeling too stretchy and found it great for me to carry DS even with a bad back and recovering from SPD during pregnancy.

My DH loved carrying DS in it so I would recommend a neutral colour like navy so that men can use it too. Another positive is that you can bf discreetly if you wanted.

One downside is that they can get a little too hot in warm weather. When I went to Spain when DS was 5 months I used the Kari-Me most of the time but had a cotton material one for during the day. I much preferred the Kari-Me as I could take DS in and out for nappy changes etc and leave the wrap on. As the other one was cotton weave and not stretchy I had to take the whole thing on and off.

Expect to get lots of lovely comments. People were always telling me that DS looked more comfortable than babies in baby carriers (I felt more comfortable too as DS was happy and his weight was well distributed).

The Kari-Me's can actually be used as hip and back carriers for children upto 15kgs or 3 years so def ok for your little one. I hope you get one and love it as much as I did.

Don't bother buying a used one from eBay as they hold their value well and are not much cheaper than new. Mine cost £32.95 last year inc p&p but I can't remember which site I got it from.

BTW the other wrap I was talking about is called the Ellaroo. It too comes highly recommended by my DH and I. If I remember right it can be used upto about 4 years old!! Although I'm not sure my back would be happy about that!!

Anyway the material is cotton rather than jersey so doesn't stretch. It's a lot cooler too for summer months this is why I bought it (didn't want to 'cook' my DS).

Hope all that info helps - sorry it was long. If you can afford it I'd say buy both.

Think I'll give one a go - thanks MummyWithA1Family.

Thanks also yangymac - we have a Lascal carrier which is great but is bulky to carry around when not in use - thought a Kari Me would give us another (less bulky) option.

Any views from anyone else welcome?

If you're not sure about the Kari-Me then I'd def recommend the Ellaroo. It's a lot firmer material if you're not sure about the strechiness of the Kari-Me. It does exactly the same job but isn't strechy.
Hope you like whatever you decide on x

Thanks all - problem solved as friend has just had a baby and she says she would like Kari Me if we're not happy with it ...... suspect I'll wish we'd got one sooner and will be looking for more supportive one but at least we can try it and not loose out now - can't wait for it to arrive x

Absolute pleasure. Do come back once you've tried it out and let us know how you got on. Just a thought, I searched Kari-Me on You Tube to see how to put it on, found it easier to watch it done rather than go by fixed position pictures.

Hope you love it as much as I did.

I am looking at getting a kari me but not sure if it will be suitable for me as I am chunky a siez 22-24 on top will the sling me long enough?

Judijue · 30/08/2010 22:48

I'm a size 18 and find there's plenty of room - DH also uses it and he's 6ft - not sure of his chest size in inches but wears x-large tops. Not sure that really helps you Hmm

As 'first time users' we're both really happy with our kari me - stretches a bit over time but DS not in it for too long at any one time - he seems to love it too - only regret is that we didn't get one sooner x
