Best Fat free or low syn yogurt

Hi Everyone.

I have/had a problem with fat free/low syn yogurt. Can't have the Miller light as they have or did have gelatine in them. I found most lowfat/syn yogurt watery. What is your favourite one (the natural ones not flavoured) that seem ok?

I feel the same about cottage cheese and will continue to have the Lawleys one as it is about 6 syns I think. I remember hating the watery low fat/syn ones.

I know it goes completely against what you've asked but feel the need to say it anyway. Low fat yoghurts are bad, they are just so full of sugar it's ridiculous.

I'm recently diagnosed as diabetic so test my blood sugars regularly and low fat yoghurts are one of the worst foods for spiking my sugar levels. On par with chocolate or sweets.

The big problem with that is that after the spike comes the hunger, so it becomes a wasted exercise, you have the worse tasting yoghurt because if has less calories but it makes you hungry so you end up eating more calories.

You're better off having a full fat Greek yoghurt or one of the quark high protein ones.

Just eat normal yoghurt, it’s tasty and not full of crap.

Completely agree with PPs. What's the point in low fat yoghurt? Nutrionally void and doesn't fill you up.

Yes, you are of course all right! I am type 2 Diabetic. I do find full fat yogurt better so I will just syn it. I cannot do low fat cottage cheese but have recently discovered I like full fat!

Skyr is filling and low syn.

Aldi do a fat free greek yoghurt, it is in a white tub with pink writing on it. It is slightly thicker than any other fat free yoghurt I have found.

Lidl do their version of it too. White tub pink writing. I prefer the aldi one but the lidl one is ok too.

Fage 0% Greek is pricey but yum - if too sharp, I add a little granulated Splenda, and lots of berries. Frozen raspberries turn into mush when thawed and it's almost like raspberry jam!

Cardboardeaux · 10/10/2024 20:14

I just have plain natural yoghurt. There isn't much difference in calories compared to the fat-free stuff and it's more satisfying so I don't bother synning it.

Fizzadora · 10/10/2024 20:20

Fage is actually Greek yogurt (higher protein, less sugar). Lidl and Aldi versions are Greek Style yogurts. They taste nicer but that's because they have more sugar, additives and fillers.

Low fat yoghurts are (1) a chemical shit storm and (2) ridiculously high in sugar.

Could you try a greek yoghurt instead?

sleekitbeastie · 12/10/2024 08:22

Would natural (non-flavoured) fat free yogurt class as a "chemical shit storm"? Some have marginally higher natural sugar content, but certainly not ridiculously high.

No shouldn't do if it's just natural yoghurt, you'll be able to tell from the ingredients which won't include sugar or sweeteners.

There will always be some carb/sugar content because milk has sugar in it.

The "fat free" advertised yoghurts have as much as a tablespoon of sugar per pot.

Just to give a likeness, when I was being taught how to deal with Hypos when I was prescribed insulin the guideline is that if your sugar goes dangerously low you should have a high sugar snack like a mini can of full sugar coke or 5 jelly babies. Something with about 15g carb. Lots of the fat free yoghurts would meet this criteria.
