Will be joining SW this week as I need to lose 2 stone over the next few months. I only want to do SW as a short term thing, I have much more weight to lose, approx 100lbs in total but I'm hoping this will give me a good push. I regularly exercise so that side is covered. I know all about calorie counting and am happy to do this afterwards but do need something quick just for 12 weeks or so. Has anyone tried this approach to help them in the first few months?

SW is more about educating yourself into better eating habits

It's not really about counting calories , it's more showing you that if you fill a third of your plate with very low density foods like salad or veg , with some protein, fibre and calcium

Managing a treat now and then and encourage us to move more

I think it's one of the healthiest plans out there , I just don't agree with the unlimited rice pasta potato

Have you thought about getting on the free 12 weeks from you doctor offer? If your BMI is over 30 you qualify.

picklemewalnuts · 09/01/2022 16:27

I did, kind of, but then decided to keep going. It's motivating, knowing that the slower you lose weight the more it will cost you!

I'm now a target member, which I think is invaluable to keep the weight off. At one point I'll reduce my target and go again- maybe another stone or two- but for the moment I'm happy to stay at this weight. I think my body needs to get used to the shock!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 09/01/2022 17:55

Interesting. Are you going for free now, Pickled, if that's the Target Weight you set yourself? Disclaimer, recent SW leader wasn't good, so this is just what I have gleaned, and possibly misunderstood...

picklemewalnuts · 09/01/2022 21:27

Yes, that's right.

You set your own target (must be a loss of at least 7lb), then go free when you reach that point. You have to go at least once a month to keep your membership active- though I bet that's negotiable once you've been going a fair while, and know the leader.

There's a maintenance plan- they don't just say 'tada, you've arrived'. There's guidance as to how to balance your diet going forward. Different paths according to how fast you've been losing weight.

You need to stay within half a stone of your declared target.

You can 'tweak' your target, with the help of the group consultant, but I don't know how that works, yet.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/01/2022 09:34

Ah right, thanks. I think if you tweak your target, you need to pay if it's less and outside the half stone buffer, until you get there... Dunno what happens if you decide to adjust it upwards... I am considering setting an interim target of something up on my official goal weight, but it still seems like a way down the line. Means it doesn't seem so overwhelming for me. Who knows, as I get nearer to it I might feel differently!

picklemewalnuts · 10/01/2022 17:03

I absolutely set an interim target. Then I decided to move it to the point I am now, which is still an interim target. You can tweak it a pound or two, without paying, but it's in negotiation with your leader- so people don't game the system, I expect.

I'm still, BMI wise, obese. I wanted to be merely overweight, but I can't quite face the last half stone right now! I've lost almost 6 stone, and feel 100% better than I did. I'm not sure I need to lose more, but I may like to at some point.

It certainly wouldn't be realistic to aim for a 'healthy' zone BMI. I think I'd look ill. I'm aware though, that could be years of being accustomed to being overweight speaking. So I want to 'settle into' this weight before making any more decisions.

Wilma55 · 10/01/2022 17:12

@picklemewalnuts I think you have to be within 3lb of target now to get free membership.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/01/2022 17:44

Well done @picklemewalnuts that's a great achievement! I would gladly settle for Overweight at this point!

picklemewalnuts · 10/01/2022 19:56

It's 3.5 below or above, so a 7lb window Wilma. Quite achievable. I want to be at the bottom of my window, so I can have a bit of room for indulgent times- Christmas, holidays etc.

You get a week's grace too. After Christmas I was above my 'window', but I would only have paid if I'd been above this week as well. As it was, I lost weight so am back in my target zone. I just need to get down a little now, to the bottom of the 7lb zone, 3.5lb above or below my target.

I work in KG so that confuses me sometimes.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 11/01/2022 08:18

I am too old to work in Kg... When you said 'Window Wilma' I was hearing the jingle for Wilma Windows in my head. Maybe it's just a midlands window company, but I now have an ear worm Grin
