The best advice i was given is work out a couple of breakfasts you can alternate without too much thought & don't use many/any syns and then properly plan the rest of the day. So a typical day for me might be:
Start by Weighing a jug of skimmed milk to use throughout the day on cereal and in tea/coffee. This is 1 of my 2 HEA.
Breakfast will be either 2 weetabix (this is the 1 HEB done) along with a decent serving of frozen mixed berries (defrosted
) and some a teaspoon of maple syrup (0.5 syn) OR poached egg and spinach on 2 pieces of 400g toast (this would be my HEB)
Mid morning another coffee using my weighted milk, an apple and if I'm hungry a banana or some protein like a hard boiled egg or piece of lean chicken or sometimes use my syns for a biscuit
Lunch: something like omelette filled with spinach, mushrooms and 30g of Parmesan (2nd & final HEA) or jacket potato with bean and cheese (alternative HEA option) both served with a big side salad and a tablespoon of Mary Berry light dressing (1.5 syns) or a vegetable and pasta soup plus piece of fruit or yogurt.
Mid afternoon - pear and a satsuma or some alpro yogurt and chopped banana (0.5 syn for the yogurt) or if I'm really hungry small bowl of soup or even mini leftovers mea if it's a free/speed meal.
Dinner: This can be anything you choose but my main meal tends to be family orientated so lots of pasta like Spag Bol or meat balls, fish & chicken curries, risottos etc. I now serve everyone with a side of veg (usually broccoli, green beans or similar) as this is our third of a plate rule and does stop you piling up on the main meal so much. I might have some yogurt and berries for pudding or a small bag of popcorn (4 syns)
So far that means after dinner I've had both my healthy extra A & B and used 8 syns. I tend to have a piece of dark chocolate most nights (3 syns) or might have a glass of wine if I have enough syns left but try and go for g&t (slimline tonic is free so it's just a few syns for the gin!)
Plan plan plan your main meals - find recipes, make sure you've got the ingredients, try new things so you don't get board, make sure you're not cooking separately for the rest of the family (I only cook sw friendly meals and 99% are enjoyed by everyone)
. if you're not the main or only cook, you'll need to get them on board as sloshing a bit of oil (3 tablespoons if they're like my husband
) in the pan to fry an onions and a sprinkle handful of cheese could wave goodbye to your daily syn allowance without you even knowing!
