Are there Slimming World Vegetarians who can advise me?

I’m 58. I weigh 12st 2lbs. I weigh more now than when I had my son who is 20 🤦‍♀️ I’m on HRT. Vegetarian (but occasionally eats fish). Big cheese eater. I feel absolutely dreadful at this weight.

I have successfully lost weight in the past but it’s all been based on upping my exercise quota which I’ve always enjoyed so wasn’t a great hardship iykwim? I can’t do this now due to spinal problems.

Is it possible to lose the weight as a vegetarian using SW?

Also, when you do lose it, how do they advise keeping at your healthier weight because I have always, without fail, gained back the weight over time. Not to the extent I am now...I think that’s age, lack of exercise and grief (son is disabled; lost my mum and dad within 3 months of each other).

Any advice about joining Online? Obviously, no actual meetings at the moment.

Thanks all 😊

Hello 👋
I'm mainly veggie (meat or fish maybe once a month) and have lost 8st on slimming world. Started March 2018 and got to target October 2019. Have kept it off so far 👍. Once you're a target member they give you tailored support to maintain your weight. I too love cheese 🧀. There is a limit on the amount of cheese you can have as part of your daily dairy portion but you can up it by using your treats allocation which uses a points based system. I find it very easy. You can join online atm. I attend weekly zoom meetings with my group each Monday.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/05/2020 12:54

@RoseyLentil that’s an amazing weight loss, you must feel like a very different person 😊

I’ll have a look at joining online then. I just don’t want to feel like I’m ravenous all the time because that’s my downfall... I start to “pick”.

I’ve had a look at the programmes. Can anyone tell me ... how do you find out the value of Syns? Look it up online? How?

1 syn is 20 calories, unless it has a "free food" in in (eg vegetables or pasta or whatever).

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/05/2020 19:45

Okay. Do they give an online list of the “free foods” “syns”?

Hi OP. My best friend is a slimming world goddess and is also vegetarian. She's currently offering online classes Smile
I've sent her the link to your thread so hopefully will be in touch Smile you've got this!

Just cut down on cheese a piece no bigger than a match box eat more fruit and veg and don't drink wine. Menopause is a bitch but without cheese and wine your weight will come off

oohnicevase · 17/05/2020 19:51

I'm vege and started 2 weeks into lockdown and a very similar weight.. I have lost nearly a stone so far .. it's totally do able !

Squintybumcheek · 17/05/2020 19:53

Hi Op

I am on week 2 of online slimming world and enjoying so far. Easy as a vegetarian - loads of free food to eat- rice pasta veg fruit quorn mince no pieces lentils.

You get an allowance of dairy and allowance for bread and then 15 syns so you can spend that on treats or on other foods eg cheese over and above your allowance. You get an app with search function so you can look up syns on items.

I don’t like the fact that avocados are apparently forbidden but a load of low fat junk is apparently fine. They seem to have their values upside down. I wonder if it actually teaches people to eat nutritious food rather than think about calories. There are good fats and bad fats . My experiences haven’t been good but willing to give it another go. I do best on low carb and unlimited pasta would not work for me.

“I don’t like the fact that avocados are apparently forbidden but a load of low fat junk is apparently fine. They seem to have their values upside down.”

Except avocados aren’t forbidden they’re just too high in fat and calories to be a free food and people clearly don’t actually like them enough to count them, so don’t eat them.

Oh and eating loads of low fat junk isn’t advised either.

“I wonder if it actually teaches people to eat nutritious food rather than think about calories.”

You’re encouraged to eat veg, fruit, lean proteins... rather than getting obsessive about calories.

“I do best on low carb and unlimited pasta would not work for me

It’s not unlimited, it’s swap out at least 1/3 of every portion for low carb veg and stop eating when you’re comfortably full... not bursting.

OP - it’s totally do-able as a vegetarian, just don’t eat the meat, lol

There are vegetarian recipes, you can swap meat substitutes for others if you eat them and you can adapt your own recipes to fit it fairly easily as well

Groups are running online, if you look up your closest one and get in touch they’ll be able to tell you how that works.

RosesandIris · 18/05/2020 20:42

Thanks, I'll think again..

I had an amazing sweet potato and chard curry last night. What I love about SW is how easy it is to adapt recipes. Swop out oil for frylight and your good to go. I also use my Syns for avocados and for grated block coconut. Before SW I ate loads of those plus loads of nuts and seeds and having controlled amounts of those has really helped me (2 1/2 stone lost and kept off for 15 years)

Bobbi73 · 05/06/2020 03:27

I've been doing as a vegetarian who eats fish occasionally but not eggs. It's been really easy. The recipes are generally great. There are loads of high protein meat replacements on the market many of which are free or very low syn.
Check out some of the recipes online. They're mostly quick and easy and I always batch cook and freeze the rest for another day. I've lost 9 pounds do far and it's coming off slow and steady, usually only a half or a pound a week but it's good.
Ps. The slimming world hifi bars are really nice!

fatgirlrunning · 14/06/2020 19:54

Hi, I started a few days ago and I'm vegan.

I'm finding it very easy to adapt plus you can search for recipes on the Pinch of Nom website.

I log my food using the SW app and it automatically tells me Syns, healthy extras and free foods.

Most of my Syns are used on things like Violife cheese, some meat replacements and vegan mayo.

Time will tell how successful I will be!

DrCoconut · 17/06/2020 19:31

Watch your iron. I'm recovering from a deficiency that started when I did SlimmingWorld. I think I'm the absence of meat having to drastically reduce cereal was bad for me. During lockdown I'm concentrating on getting well and also sorting my diet so I can lose weight again. I don't blame SW as such, more that you have to watch nutrients.

ksa103 · 22/06/2020 16:57

I'm vegan and SW is really easy to follow.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 24/06/2020 12:21

I'm vegan and finding it quite easy too. There's a really good Facebook group for vegans on SW that I would recommend.
