My first month of slimming world. (Long but hopefully worth it read)

TootinBarbs · 02/12/2018 15:10

So, tomorrow will be the last weigh-in day for my first month on slimming world. Throughout the month I've searched the net for help and advise and always been took to mumsnet, so I've made an account today and thought I'd join the community to try and share my journey and help others a long theirs.

Now please let me start by saying in no way, shape or form am I am expert, or somebody who's experienced in weight loss. But I am somebody who knows that sometimes as humans we look to somebody else for advise, wether that be through a post on here or a friend/family member. Somtimes hearing somebody else's story answers a load of self doubt we have in ourselves.

July 2018 - I had just got married and u was weighing in at 23 stone and a half. At this point I has spoken to somebody about advise on weight loss as I was struggling to maintain the gym as I work 49 hours over 6 days so my free time and physical ability was very limit. He basically advised me to look at my eating habits, and see which ones are the worst and try and change those. So immediately I knew it was white bread, excess sugar and a lack of water. So I at that point I'd slowly begin to cut out my intake of white carbs (which mainly consisted of bread) and excess sugar which again mainly consisted of sugar in my coffee. This for me was the hardest part of my journey. To cut out something you have, almost as a habit, is definitely mind over matter.

Early November - I skip this far a head because honestly I wasn't tracking my weight at this point. But from July I had completely gotten used to only having 1 sugar in my coffee rather than 3, and I had no white bread at all. I still had carbs but I didn't have bread. One day I decided to step on the scales and I was 21 stone.. this came as a complete shock as I didn't anticipate how much impact cutting out the foods I did would make. This is what ultimately gave me that spirit to say "I can change".

My first week sticking to the extra easy plan was actually really refreshing. It was a little like clockwork trying to set my self my daily targets for writing everything down, well, for me it was just remembering it my amazing wife handled all of that. But mainly to make sure I've had my 5+ speed foods, what I can and can't have, what I spend my syns on, what meals for my lunch at work will be! Honestly it's daunting, and that's normal.. But it really does get easier. Now the best thing I can advise on the first week is please don't go in expecting an absolutely massive weight loss like 9/10 articles you read suggest you will. Honestly, it doesn't always work out that way. This is the breaking in stage for your and your body to adjust. Have fun with it, enjoy your self. Explore more food options, expand your food pallet.

My first week I lost 3lb... and I instantly compared it to the people losing 8lb+ in their first week and I felt so disappointed. Tomorrow, I'm hoping to have lost a stone in a my first month of slimming world.

I just wanted to share my story, my journey. I want somebody to read and hopefully relate. You can change, never doubt yourself. - Tootin.

TootinBarbs · 02/12/2018 15:56

Thank you @Noodle!

I just hope people can relate and become inspired. Losing weight isn't easy but it can be done! I'm hoping to reach my overall target of 15 stone. Smile

That’s amazing! Well done on your weight loss. Your story has given me hope that I can change and get to my goal weight.

TootinBarbs · 03/12/2018 22:49

I'm really glad it has helped you. I know how hard it is, and how hard it continues to be but little changed honestly go a long way. The first part isn't directed to slimming world but honestly it really helped me adapt to not having certain foods anymore. The beauty of slimming world it's food optimising, and it explores so many different foods and flavours. You can still have those beloved household dishes, but at a guilt free cost. As for any big change in life the first week is the hardest, purely to adapt to a different lifestyle and fitting new things into your normal routine but I can honestly say I've never felt better.

Well done @TootinBarbs

JaceLancs · 04/12/2018 08:40

Well done!
We are all different though I’m a very slow loser but determined to get there in the end
Been doing SW for 2 years (lost 5 stone) previously lost 2 stone by having to go gluten free and upping exercise so 7 stone in total
Still got 1.5 stone to go
2019 will be the year I get there even if it takes me till next Xmas

TootinBarbs · 04/12/2018 13:13

That's brilliant @Jacelancs... it's all about the determination. You will do it! My weight losses haven't been huge as such, but they've been consistent. I think when I'm down another stone or two I may try the gym again as I'd be 4 stone lighter than when I first went

@TootinBarbs

That's AMAZING.

I wish I could get my head into a diet. I started on Jan 8th this year determined to lose weight ready for a 'big' birthday next year and I haven't been able to lose more than 9lb as I am so crap at sticking to it!

I just see things and cant not have them. I am now heavier than when I started. I have till Feb to lose weight - I originally wanted to lose 5 stone but think I will be happy with 2!

Would you recommend cutting out Sugar and bread? Bread is a biggy for me and crisps I just crave them!

TootinBarbs · 04/12/2018 14:06

@Peachqueen - most definitely. Bread was a killer for me too but too much white carbs are certainly not good for you. I'd not suggest completely going cold turkey, but perhaps dwindle your self away from it. The beauty on slimming world is you can have the syns you want as it's a part of the balance. For example my syns I will have crisps and chocolate on a night after work as it's my comfort time. I don't feel deprived at all, as I'm still allowed to have my craving food. You'll get there, it's a mind over matter situation.

Groovee · 04/12/2018 19:42

@PeachQueen I used to have bread daily but now usually only have once at week at the most now. Barely miss it which was what I did worry about.

JaceLancs · 04/12/2018 21:21

Just weighed in tonight and lost 1 am disappointed but at least it’s a loss

TootinBarbs · 04/12/2018 23:45

Take every lb lost as a massive achievement. Losing a pound of far seriously is a lot. Well done! - but I agree on the cutting out bread. Eventually you'll not even think about it, you'll not miss it anymore!

MissKummerspeck · 05/12/2018 09:10

Had my first weigh in and I’m 15st 5! This the heaviest I’ve been :-( I’m really disgusted that I let myself get to this stage. I would like to check in here every week with my progress, I do not want to see that number on the scale ever again!

Start weight: 15st 5
Goal weight: 12st

TootinBarbs · 05/12/2018 14:09

Don't feel disgusted, it happens to he best of us... I know exactly the feeling you felt when I realised I was so big. But you've practically done the hardest part. Getting on the scales and accepting it's time to change is by far the biggest step, so for that well done! Please keep in touch on this thread. I would be more than happy to help!

TootinBarbs · 06/12/2018 12:57

I'm hoping to lose a minimum of 2lb a week going forward

OP posts:
LouHill · 06/12/2018 21:31

You have done amazing x

TootinBarbs · 07/12/2018 15:17

Thank you. Its only the start. I need to achieve stone by stone. I'll be happy when I don't see my self as a lump of lard in the mirror.

TootinBarbs · 08/12/2018 17:37

I've got till Monday and hopefully I will be down to the high end of 19 stone. I think I'm being hopeful for a 4lb loss though.

OP posts:
TootinBarbs · 10/12/2018 07:36

Down to 20st 1lb. So was a 4lb loss but I miss calculated I needed 5lb loss to hit 19 stone.
