Mum says she is worried that I am very ill due to my weight.

I don't feel ill.
I am concerned that perhaps I am not seeing what she sees.
So here is a picture.
I know I am 2 stone over where I am comfortable and 3 from ideal.
But do I really look like I am about to die or something?
Be brutal I can take it.

The thing is, it isn't 29 is fine, 30 Mrs you'll get complications due to being overweight. It's better to be in the healthy range. It sounds like you've got a plan though. My aunt lost 6 stone on slimming world eating loads of good food.

PhoenixJasmine · 01/02/2017 22:40

You look similar to me, perhaps a teensy bit bigger, and I have a BMI of 33 (obese) and need to lose around 4 stone to be healthy, so in all honestly I would think you had more than 2-3 stone to lose. However there are other measures of fitness/health than BMI - resting heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, body fat % etc.
So no you don't look like you're about to have a heart attack, just yet, but the excess weight will almost definitely be having some detrimental effect on your health.

PopcornBits · 01/02/2017 22:41

11 stone isn't a terrible amount of weight. And your BMI isn't shockingly overweight, but you are overweight.
I think you do carry most in the middle too which is regarded as worse, because usually it's linked with heart disease and the likes etc.
Your mum saying you look ill isn't very nice, could have been worded better if she had your best interest at heart x

MollyHuaCha · 01/02/2017 22:42

Your three strategies sound great - good habits you can set for life. I think your mum has poss been reading/listening to a news story about the benefits of being at optimum weight. She's concerned for you, that's all. If you wd like to lose weight, keep going with the things you already do and if you want to add more, maybe get a diet sheet from yr dr or follow a mainstream weight loss programme. Thanks for posting pic and inviting comments, v brave and I applaud you. Good luck and if you lose some weight post up another pic to show us Flowers

CheekyChunkyChicken · 01/02/2017 22:43

I know it works really well for some but mum was a bad advert for it as she was manic about her intake. Cut almost all fat sugar meat (lean turkey only) and chastised anyone who is less diligent than her.
Anyway it isn't about her it is about my work ahead.
I have a big holiday ahead this summer so would love to be a size 12 for then.

You don't look dangerously overweight at all! But you are overweight as you have very sensibly recognised. Well done on losing a stone.

You must be quite short, I think (my BMI would be under 25 at 11 stone), so although you need to lose quite a few BMI points, you haven't got as much weight to lose as a taller person might. Where would you be if you lost another stone? Sounds as if you are doing all the right things, so ignore unhelpful comments and keep plugging away.

user1477282676 · 01/02/2017 22:48

I looked almost the same as you OP until quite recently. I'm 44....I have smaller boobs but the rest was very similar.

I was mainly worried because of the weight around my middle...that's very unhealthy and has ramifications.

So, because I'm not a HUGE eater I had to look at my lifestyle and I was just lazy! I've lost only half a stone but it shows...I am losing another stone....I've done it by sitting down less.

I hate sports and I only like walking and cycling, neither of which burn many cals....so I just began to garden more, to clean more and to tidy up more.

I was by my own admission a bad housekeeper...and doing more has certainly helped me lose weight.

"PopcornBits

I think if I'm reading correctly, 11 stone is where Cheeky would like to get to, rather than where she is now.

FatOldBag · 01/02/2017 22:50

Does she definitely mean because of your figure? There's a big difference between needing to lose a couple of stone and being about to drop dead! Is she usually over dramatic about things? Or could it be that she means you look very pale all of a sudden or something like that? In which case we wouldn't be able to tell from photos.

CheekyChunkyChicken · 01/02/2017 22:51

Ooh no I didn't type correctly I will be happy at 11 stone but that is 2 stone away.
I am currently 13 stone and not happy about it.

I'm 14 stone and an inch taller than you and I am noticing effects on my health. Just little things like not being able to sit still for long periods without shifting and getting out of breath running for a bus. I think you are overweight but certainly nothing that should be making others concerned for your health.

PickAChew · 01/02/2017 23:06

Almost the same weights as you at the same ages. No reason you can't get back to a healthy BMI in 6 months, just watching what you eat, with the help of my Fitness Pal. Exactly what I did, last year. Now working on getting down to 9st7, v. v. slowly and steadily.

PuppyMouse · 01/02/2017 23:11

Yep you are same height as me too OP so we are defo body twins. I say you will be more comfortable if you can get to that 11 stone weight (exactly where I prefer to be - am currently nearer 11.5.) I ride so wanted to shift weight for the benefit of my horse too but it's nice to be a bit less heavy and more mobile.

But don't let what your mum said get to you. Just quietly get on with what you want to do and do it for yourself.

PickAChew · 01/02/2017 23:12

Ah- I was 11st7, this time, last year, but I'm several inches shorter than you!

steady does it. You didn't get that big fast. Concentrate on developing good eating habits so you don't automatically rebound when you reach target.

operaha · 04/02/2017 08:17

I'm a shorter version i think, maybe smaller, 11 stone but 5ft 3. I just wanted to say you can walk more!! I've upped my daily target from 10k to 13k and am smashing it and work 40+ a week. No excuses! Tell us your routine? I've noticed since I've upped my steps, I'm getting faster too, I'm hooked on walking and leave the car if i can. I do have to drive to work but if i can leave it i do. Started walking on my lunch break if i get one too!

Bluntness100 · 04/02/2017 08:28

I think yes you're overweight and are aware of it and doing something about it, but i would not classify you as in the about to die category.

Maybe your mum has a fixation on weight and is just trying to push you a bit, and doing it the wrong way. Just keep going with your plan and I'm sure you'll be fine.

BasinHaircut · 07/02/2017 08:36

OP if you did want to try SW it doesn't have to be like that (no meat, no fat, no sugar), although it is a low fat, low sugar diet so depending on your diet now you may need to cut down on some things.

It is a really good eating plan for people who like to eat generous amounts and lose weight at the same time.

BabyHamster · 07/02/2017 08:42

Yes you look overweight and if I'm being totally honest you look to me like you have more than two stone to lose. You certainly do not look like you are about to drop dead though!
