Slimming World

Resistant to weight loss

How slow do some of you lose weight?

Since having my second child (8 years ago!) I just seem so resistant to losing weight, which usually ends in me just giving up.

I've restarted Slimming World for the umpteenth time and whilst I will usually lose a pound or even two in the first week, it seems to stop there. I'll go through a cycle of gaining a pound, losing it, staying the same, etc, etc. It's so demoralising.

I feel more determined to stick with it this time to see if I might get the coveted fat whoosh.

What's even more annoying is that my husband is doing the same plan with me and dropping pounds.

I know I'm sticking to the plan. Please reassure me it will work in the end!!

Do you complete and submit a food diary every week for your SW consultant to look at and comment on?

I find the more I exercise the less I lose, which is very frustrating.

I'm doing it online so I'm recording on the app.

Interesting about the exercise thing. I suppose that's because you're building muscle?

I'm no expert at all, but it might be worth checking to see if you have any signs of PCOS, insulin resistance or pre-diabetic syndrome. A relative of mine said very much the same thing as you have in your op - she would lose a small amount and then stop losing despite trying hard to stick to various plans. Then she went to her doctor (about something unrelated) and got a PCOS diagnosis. She was advised to follow a different type of diet (I don't know the details but I suspect probably lower carb) and has managed to lose quite a bit of weight.

Been there and done that loads of times. The consultants around here are too self important.

I feel like I can do it myself. I know the plan well. I think it's just me.

That's interesting jellycat.

I've been for blood tests in the past but levels always come back in the normal range. That was a long time ago now though. Maybe I'll try again.

Do you actually have weight to lose?
Slimming world is to get you to a healthy weight.
I know many people who are a healthy weight thinking they can do a weight loss plan like SW to go to a low end of healthy BMI. But SW is aimed at getting overweight people to a healthy weight not to get thin.

Could be you are carb sensitive? I tried SW but carbs were far too high for me and I put on weight ConfusedI'm also hypothyroid so my metabolism is shot to shit.
There's a test thing online which is quite helpful in determining your sensitivity to carbs
www.diagnosisdiet.com/carbohydrate-sensitivity-quiz/
I used my fitness pal to keep my carbs low (max 30g a day worked for me) and lost 3-4 lbs a week.

Definitely overweight. BMI is around 30. Want to lose about 3 stone.

Of course I'll lose weight if I starve myself but that's not the idea of this plan is it? It's meant to be sustainable. I've massively cut down on portion size and all my meals are slimming world recipes. In fact, I'm trying out this mindful eating thing where you stop eating as soon as you feel full.

Syns are 10 and under. I don't drink and I've cut out 80% of sweet treats like chocolate. I really can't see how I'm eating too much.

I tried a low carb diet a few months ago. This worked in the past, before my second child but even that didn't have the desired effect.

But people in concentration camps died from starvation quicker than others.

I remember a programme about a street in the Midlands. They were looking at who had lived there over the past 1000year or something like that.

It traced families to the descendants alive today living in various locations around the world.

One particular family who lived in a particular house during the 19th century had a description of the family and despite at the time having meagre rations, a couple of slices of bread and dripping per day sort of thing described the mother of the family as a big lady. How she could have been fat no one knew as there wasn't enough to eat for anyone.
Her descendant they traced as an actor . I cant remember his name but he too despite watching what he ate is quite a big person and seemed to think looking at his ancestor this was exactly why he failed to lose weight on any diet.

I think there is more to it than don't eat and you will lose weight. For some they would starve to death in weeks, in others, the same size and weight they could carry on for years

I felt similarly and had virtually given up thinking I was wasting my time then I rejoined SW in Jan and I feel I've brought a more realistic and determined head with me. It didn't go on in a few months so why should it come off? Just take it day by day and do it. Don't worry about the loss and don't weigh at home - go to class or use Boots scale for accuracy and it honesty will begin to go. I joined 6/1/17 and so far 13lbs gone. It's not world shattering but it's great progress and I'll just plod on with it. The very best of luck to you 👍🏻

Are you weighing things like pasta? It's quite calorie dense and most people eat way too much of it.

I think slimming world can trick people with the free foods, they still have calories in them!

Weight loss is very simple. Simply expend more than you consume. In reality we are our own worst saboteurs and it is rarely easy.

If you are not losing weight you are eating more than you need. Medical conditions that prevent you from losing weight are very rare. Are you tracking everything that you eat?If SW is not working after multiple attempts try something else. WW SmartPoints plan will help you get portion sizes under control. I have lost a stone in three weeks doing the no sugar diet. MFP very good for monitoring calories in.

Low carb, low diet & high protein.

Unfortunately, you'll have to restrict you calorie content too. Doesn't sound much fun but it's best to be in it 100% than half and half.

Your body needs less carbs & more protein. Sugar doesn't help either.

I don't know what your financial situation is like but I went to a nutritionist. It actually cost me less than 500 over a year. The big thing we focused on was my thyroid function as it was over and then became under. Then we worked on stress levels (my sister died so was a difficult time for me). The high cortisol levels were effecting my thyroid function which was making me put on weight. Aside from nutrition and medical tests little things like having salt baths before bed and doing yoga/meditation to reduce stress levels helped a lot. I now have normal levels. It wasn't easy but by working with my nutritionist it was a step by step approach in the right direction. If anyone wants her name its loveinsideout.co.uk. Hope it helps :)))

Well, just to add. I started SAW on 5th January. After losing the odd pound to half pound a week, or maintaining or gaining the odd half pound, I was ready to quit. I stuck to plan. Kept my Syns well in check. Started to run three times a week, strength train with a PT twice a week. The scales were not reflecting any of the effort I was putting in.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, it's like something just gave. I have lost 16 pounds in total since I started, and 6.5 of those were in the last two weeks. Every one in group is on their two stone award or more so to get a one stone award last night was bloody brilliant.

I know I have lost inches though so don't forget to measure yourself.

That's great Margot, well deserved by sounds of it. I also find it super slow and went through that 'it doesn't work for me' feeling but ultimately if we do it right and for long enough it does. I've lost 1.5 since 6 Jan. Another 10 lbs to go to target- the closest I've ever been and I've also joined and left or skulked away more times than I want to admit. I've come to the conclusion I like feeling better about myself more than any sweets/cakes I want so mostly I don't eat them. Good luck to you on your SW journey 😊

If you find that SW isn't working for you, why don't you try MyFitnessPal instead??
