Looking at starting Slimming World but I have some daft questions

This may sound daft, but I can't work out what I would be getting for my weekly fee Confused

I've read various posts on here and I've been on the website and it seems that each week, you get weighed, then sit around and listen to everyone explain how they've lost (or gained) weight. I know it's me that's missing the point somewhere so can someone explain the point of the weekly meetings? Do they really help you stay focussed?

Also, I can't eat fish and the non-veggie menus seem to highly rely on it, so am I going to have to use the vegetarian options/menus?

They do help some people stay focused, you've also got people telling you about recipes or foods they've tried and that's useful too.

Personally I mostly weigh in and leave, I need that weigh in to keep me on track... But not so much the sitting about afterwards. I do stay if there's a taster night or something the consultant has texted me about staying for, but not every week.

There aren't any set menus, I mean I know magazines and papers run them occasionally and people put up typical menus, but there's no issue at all with not eating fish.

Yes there are no 'set' menus. You decide yourself what you want to eat on a daily basis. The ones online / in magazines are just suggestions.

The fee gets you access to the website & associated pages as well. We just used to weigh & go at our last group because we didn't really like the consultant. It does help you stay focused. You can only really buy the recipe books & hi fi bars at group as well.

Thank You, I hadn't thought about the online stuff.

I've just been speaking to MIL who did SW a couple of years ago. She can lend me some of the recipe books, but she hasn't got the optimisation book any more.

She did say that her sister had been given SW vouchers from the doctors. As itwas my doctor who told me to lose weight, I might speak to him and see if they still offer them.

In respect of veggie options, if you eat rice pasta grains vegetables, soya/tofu type things and can cook somewhat then you'll be fine with sw.
Groups as others have said, you get to find out what others have done or eaten to shed some lbs. You get to talk with people who understand how your feeling about weight issues that are affecting you, no judging included in what you say.
You can always drop in a group, sit in and see if it floats your boat.Smile before you commit.

The fee is just £5 a week, not much. I just go for a weigh in and it makes me stick to the diet. My veggie friend has does it and has lost loads.

sootballs · 22/03/2015 14:43

I have a 12 week pass from GP as I can't afford classes. I am not a huge fan of the weigh and stay but I am even less of a fan of my current fat levels.

AutumnDragon · 22/03/2015 16:20

sootballs I think I'm going to be the same, I hate the idea of sitting around and explaining why I only lost 1lb, but if it keeps me going, I'll endure it.

I rang my doctor's surgery and they said they didn't do them, but I might ask for a referral to the dietitian and see if she can give me vouchers.

i LOVE my slimming world group. its changed my life. im really shy so struggled in group at first but now i have some amazing friends and people i want to see and talk to and support which drives me to go every week even if ive not had a good week. 4 and half stone loss since july now at target...still go every week to weigh and still stay. honestly if you do it and commit to it and have an open mind and stay to group then you will just be super inspired and love your slimming world family

tabulahrasa · 22/03/2015 17:58

"I think I'm going to be the same, I hate the idea of sitting around and explaining why I only lost 1lb"

That would not happen in mine, a lb off is a lb off...she does ask if you're ok if you've maintained or put on, if you know why and are quite happy or if there's anything you need to ask about before going off to do your next week, but there's never any negativity about how much you've lost or how fast you're losing.

I've been to other slimming clubs before and as well as not liking the actual diet, I've hated being put on the spot for not losing enough or if they announce exactly what you've gained one week to the class, but that doesn't happen at all in the one I'm in, it's a well done if you've lost no matter how small and just a, so are you ok for next week if you haven't...though they do still say how much if you lost and there's actual clapping Hmm

But there really isn't a huge pressure to lose fast, I'm a slow loser, but it still adds up eventually.

emwithme · 22/03/2015 18:19

If you "only" lose 1 lb a week, but lose it every week, you will have lost 3 stone 10 lbs in a year.

I found it really useful to stay for the talk after weighing, you get lots of recipe ideas and support from other people when it's not going so well (and realise that other people are in the same boat as you and it's not all flowers and sunshine for them)

AutumnDragon · 22/03/2015 21:47

If I could lose 3.5 stone in a year I'd be ecstatic.

DMil has asked if she can come with me - she used to do it but has put on a stone and wants to lose it again. So not only do I have moral support but when we go to hers for Easter, I know she'll be serving SW meals Grin
