Tell me how you get your baby back to sleep at night

Ok, I was spoilt with DD1 & 2 who both fed back to sleep most of the time. DS doesn't and now he won't take a dummy I can spend up to 2 hours trying to get back to sleep.

How do you get your baby back to sleep after a night feed ( and how long does it take )? I need help!!

Ha! Love your name. How old is DS?

If my DS wouldn't settle after a night feed I used to bring him to bed with us. Sometimes I put a couple of muslins up my pyjama top and put them in the cot with him after a feed so they were warm and smelled of me. Worked occasionally, I blearily recall

dd is 6 months. I give her the boob until she*s drowsy and then put her to bed. she will stir for a while and fall back asleep.

If she hasn't fed to sleep, I put her in the cot gently and pat her tummy, sing lullaby and put the radio on de-tuned so that it makes a fuzzing noise. Then lie down back in bed (which is next to the cot) and make shhh noises. If she squeaks and fusses I can reach in to pat her again. Usuallt works, but if she actually cries and screams I pick her up and walk up and down singing until she's asleep.

DS is 5 months. My normal approach is the same as yours sonilaa but it will fail at least once a night. I tend to leave him to it as he isn't crying but maybe I should spend the time patting or PU/PDing as I'm awake anyway.

Forgot to say that I prefer not to have him in bed with me but I recognize that I might have to go back to that.

ds2 used to like his ears played with or his fingers sucked! yes very weird but it worked and i got sleep!

Swaddling and rocking is sometimes resorted to here, although nothing is as effective as a feed. But DD isn't always ready to sleep straight away, so a nappy change often helps settle her (afterward) and, yes, in bed beside me at times (not always) - which is also not my preferred sleeping set-up either, but sometimes needs must...

With great difficulty I have to say - until he suddenly got the hang of it of his own accord.

(This did tie in with when we started using a Moses basket instead of his cot for daytime naps though, not sure if there was a link).

The HV did suggest things like using a hot water bottle in their cot while they're out of it to keep it warm, and wrapping the bottle in a t-shirt you've been wearing so it smells of you.

sonic boob thanks - unfortunately my name is not turning out to be prophetic!

Hi IC ben5 I always assumed finger sucking was about the sucking not the fingers IYSWIM!
